Incentive fund stallion enrollment deadline is extended to January 16. When the AQHA Incentive Fund began back in the early 1980s, it was the most innovative show-based incentive program to hit the industry, and it immediately made offspring of stallions nominated to the Incentive Fund worth more money because when the foals were enrolled, the owners of those foals got paid for AQHA eligible points they earned. AQHA is proud of the Incentive Fund and the value it has brought to the industry for nearly 30 years. Some changes needed to be made in order to reward stallion owners and to keep the program viable for another 30 years and beyond. AQHA is extending the deadline to enroll stallions to January 16, 2012 with no penalties. AQHA wants to make sure that all stallion owners understand the changes being made and give assurance that these changes were made with special consideration given to stallion owners who, since the program’s inception, have been the chief supporters of the Incentive Fund. 1. Stallion owners will get a bigger percentage back. Previously, stallion owners received 10 percent of the pool of money each year. Now that percentage has increased to 15 percent, and [...]

In late July, the American Quarter Horse Association Executive Committee approved the AQHA competition leveling plan, which was developed and recommended by the AQHA Blue-Ribbon Task Force. Full implementation of the plan will take place in 2013. Leveling program changes include more and different divisions, including new Rookie and Intermediate showing levels; more and different awards; and two novice championship shows. Leveling involves these new divisions: • Rookie (based on the exhibitor and horse’s experience/points combined) • Novice (based on the exhibitor’s experience) • Green (based on the horse’s experience) • Intermediate (based on the exhibitor’s experience) • Progressive (based on the horse’s experience) • Open This year, AQHA tested Rookie classes at 10 AQHA-approved shows to much success. In 2012, the Rookie horse and exhibitor level will officially be implemented, and Rookie classes within shows will be another option for show committees to consider when planning their 2012 schedules. Rookie classes can be offered in open, amateur and youth. Two other new levels are based just on the rider or just on the horse. The Intermediate level will be tabulated on exhibitor points, while the Progressive level will be based on a horse’s points. These levels will be implemented in 2013. [...]

Twenty-six breeders from across the country and Canada were honored by the American Quarter Horses Association as 50-Year Cumulative and Legacy breeders at a ceremony held on October 3 at the AQHA Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo, Texas. Each year, AQHA honors breeders who have dedicated their livelihoods to maintaining the integrity of the American Quarter Horse. These horsemen and families see their biggest accomplishments and proudest moments in the horses they breed. This year, the honorees included 14 who received the cumulative award and 12 who received the legacy award. Cumulative breeders are those who have registered at least one foal for 50 years cumulatively. Legacy breeders are those who have registered at least one foal for 50 consecutive years. Honorees ranged from people who have bred American Quarter Horses for cutting, ranch and rodeo use to breeders of racehorses. Recipients were also geographically dispersed, hailing from Alabama, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and Canada. All have dedicated 50 years or more to taking their best and making it better. “It’s our honor to recognize the effort and time these breeders have spent in pushing the development of the [...]

The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame has named Patti Colbert of Bertram, Texas, as the 2011 recipient of the Fern Sawyer Award. The Fern Sawyer Award, whose namesake is a 1976 Honoree and champion cowgirl, is awarded to an individual or organization that has worked toward and contributed to the advancement of the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. Previous award winners include Edward P. Bass, Georgia Mae Ericson, Anne W. Marion, Van Romans and Sheila Welch. Colbert, a member of the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame Board of Directors, is credited with creating the concept behind the Museum’s popular Cowgirl U program, and has long been an advocate for the museum among the many horse industry groups through which she has served as a leader. She has gained her most recent accolades as Executive Director of the Mustang Heritage Foundation and the creator of the Extreme Mustang Makeover through which more than 2,000 of America’s iconic wild horses have been placed for adoption. Working in cooperation with the Museum and the Bureau of Land Management, Colbert oversaw “Camp Wildfire,” a dynamic educational program that introduced youth to the plight of America’s wild horse, as well as [...]

As of 6 p.m. (Central Time) on Monday May 23, all NCHA-approved shows for the weekend of May 27-29 have been cancelled by the respective affiliates or show producers putting on those events. The NCHA appreciates this proactive move by show producers in a nationwide show of precaution and solidarity to help stop the spread of the contagious and potentially deadly Equine Herpes Virus-1 among horses. Last week, all NCHA shows had been cancelled for the weekend of May 20 -22 as a precautionary move to help stop the spread of the EHV-1 virus. Additionally, the NCHA Executive Committee, in the best interest of cutting and horse health, has cancelled the June 3 – 5 AQHA/NCHA Weekend at the 25 locations where the events were scheduled across the country. The decision to cancel AQHA/NCHA Weekend was made after consultation and in conjunction with officials from the American Quarter Horse Association, the Title Sponsor for NCHA Weekend. The NCHA Executive Committee will closely monitor the EHV-1 virus for the time period during which no NCHA-approved events will be conducted. In the near future and with full information on both the EHV-1 virus and show schedules around the country, the Executive Committee [...]

Contributed Courtesy of The American Quarter Horse Journal To help ease AQHA Select exhibitors’ minds and proactively help professionals and exhibitors make educated decisions, the AQHA Executive Committee today opted to lower qualifying points for the Adequan Select World Championship Show. The decision to lower the points was a result of the timing of the May 31 qualifying deadline for the Adequan Select and the recently reported cases of equine herpesvirus-1 myeloencephalopathy in the western United States. The Adequan Select is August 28 – September 3 in Amarillo. Since first learning of the recent cases of EHV-1, AQHA has received numerous phone calls from trainers, exhibitors and show managers primarily from states that have confirmed cases of EHV-1 or border states that have confirmed cases. Several show managers have either voluntarily canceled or are considering cancellation of their shows this weekend, and some exhibitors have expressed their reluctance to move their horses out of concern of potentially exposing them to EHV-1. “We believe it’s reasonable and responsive to our Select exhibitors struggling with the decision to try to gather a final half point or point and qualify for the Adequan Select to do the conscientious thing,” said AQHA President Peter [...]

The American Horse Council is pleased to announce the American Riding Instructors Association, International Walking Horse Association, Texas Quarter Horse Association, and the U.S. Eventing Association have all endorsed the AHC National Welfare Code of Practice. “This latest round of endorsements emphasizes the industry’s unified and continued commitment to the welfare and safety of horses. We look forward to bringing in as many organizations as possible to further reinforce the industry’s commitment to safety, health, care and welfare of all horses,” said AHC President Jay Hickey. The Welfare Code outlines in generic terms what it means for an organization to be committed to the responsible breeding, training, care, use, enjoyment, transport, and retirement of horses. Many associations have undertaken studies, reviews, and initiatives that show their commitment to the welfare of their horses. This generic code is simply a continuation of that effort. They join twenty-four other national groups that have already endorsed the Code. They include the: American Association of Equine Practitioners, American Endurance Ride Conference, American Paint Horse Association, American Quarter Horse Association, American Saddlebred Horse Association, Appaloosa Horse Club, Arabian Horse Association, Florida Thoroughbred Breeder’s and Owner’s Association, Harness Horsemen International, Kentucky Horse Council, Kentucky Thoroughbred Association, [...]

The American Sidesaddle Association, an Ohio non-profit corporation, is asking the American Quarter Horse Association to change their rules and allow sidesaddle riders to compete aboard their American Quarter Horses. Although women have been showing in sidesaddles for well over a hundred years and many breeds allow or even welcome riders showing their mounts under sidesaddle tack, the American Quarter Horse Association forbids riders from showing their horses aside. This doesn’t only affect AQHA owners, but many other stock breeds take their cues from the AQHA and follow their rules. Also, many 4-H shows and open horse shows follow the AQHA rules, so this rule means that many sidesaddle riders miss the chance to show our horses aside. Showing aside isn’t something women only do for fun. Many riders are able to continue riding and showing after an injury when they change to riding aside. Also, riders whose religion forbids them from wearing slacks, jeans or pants are able to honor their religious beliefs while riding aside. In the past, there’s been a fear that sidesaddle riding is unsafe, uncomfortable or even dangerous. Sidesaddle experts disagree. “Contrary to some rumors, it does not cause injury or pain to the horse [...]

Rider named USEF Equestrian of the Year On Saturday, January 22, in Lexington, Ky., the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) announced the winner of their Horse of the Year award-the organization’s highest honor. The award was given to American Paint Horse Colonels Nite Special, the only multiple gold medal-winning horse for Team USA at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian GamesT, held September 25 through October 10 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. This 6-year-old reining superstar helped Team USA win the team gold medal by the largest margin in history, then returned to win the individual gold medal. The other four horses in contention for the Horse of the Year award were the elite of their breeds, dominating their disciplines as well. Colonels Nite Special (registered AQHA as Gunners Special Nite) is owned by Sarah Willeman of Turnabout Farm in Gloucester, Ma., and was ridden by Tom McCutcheon of Aubrey, Texas. Willeman purchased the horse shortly before the July 2010 selection trials for the World Equestrian Games. The young stallion was ridden by McCutcheon in the selection trials in July 2010 and was named the Reserve USEF National Champion and runner-up in the trials. “I never imagined I [...]
