The 2012 National Reined Cow Horse Association Celebration of Champions concluded Sunday, February 5, with the finals of the World’s Greatest Horseman competition. The finals – which featured ten of the most accomplished horse and rider teams in the western performance horse industry – thrilled the west Texas town. The lifetime earnings of the 10 equine athletes averaged more than $115,000 – and the combined lifetime earnings of the riders exceeded $5 million. “The finals were tough – but so were the preliminaries,” Ron Emmons, who won the Championship on Olena Oak, exclaimed. “The scores in the preliminary round would have scared you they were so high. Just being able to get through it and make the finals was an accomplishment.” Emmons and the 10-year-old cow horse were steady in the first two phases of competition, marking a 216 in the herd work and a 219.5 in the rein work. Then the pair earned the high score of the steer stopping – a 222. “I told my wife Ladona that I was going to let it hang out a little today, and every time I asked this horse for anything he gave it to me,” he explained. “He just kept [...]

APHA shows some love with new flat fees, reduced late fees and introductory classes at lower rates for the 2012 AjPHA Youth World Show. Changes add spark to a full slate of World Championship classes and fun activities. In preparation for the upcoming 2012 American Junior Paint Horse Association’s (AjPHA) Youth World Championship Show, to be held June 22-30, 2012, at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, the organization put into action suggestions made over the past several years to make the Youth World Show more exhibitor-friendly, more pocketbook-friendly, and more fun. Reduced fees will make parents happy. A new “flat fee” for youth entering multiple classes provides $100 savings on six World Championship classes or six Introductory classes. Reduced late fees mean $50 savings per class on late entries, and $37.50 savings per class for those added to a pre-entry. Introductory “World Show Champion” and “Fun” classes will make kids happy. The six introductory-type World Show Champion classes are open to youth who have never earned a world or reserve world championship in APHA competition, and who ride Regular Registry Paint Horses. They are: Disciplined Rail English, Disciplined Rail Western, Ideal Paint English, Ideal Paint Western, [...]

The 2011 National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championship Show presented by John Deere kicked off January 30 during the Celebration of Champions in San Angelo, Texas. Although no prize money is awarded during the preliminary competition, there are thousands of dollars in added money for the finals of every event. When Jay McLaughlin qualified Shiney Sushi for the Open Bridle finals of the National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championship Show presented by John Deere, he and owner Carol Rose made a decision: if the 7-year-old cow horse won the World Championship, she would be retired. On Saturday, February 4, the flashy palomino mare left the show pen for the last time. She bested the field, which included some of the most prolific equine athletes in the industry by 2.5 points with a 436 – winning $8,106, a Bob’s Custom Saddle, a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Smart Boons, Rios of Mercedes boots from Rios of Mercedes, a vest sponsored by Gist Silversmiths, a $50 gift card from Santa Cruz Biotechnologies, a CR Morrison trophy and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion. For McLaughlin, of Gainesville, Texas, the win proved what he and Rose had never doubted – the mare [...]

Haley Harrington of Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. was named Arabian Horse Association 2011 Youth of the Year. An outstanding individual with an incredible record of success at just 18, Harrington made her way into the hearts of the Youth of the Year Committee with her ardent involvement with Arabian horses and her unwavering commitment to her school and community. Harrington has been front and center as a leader for the Arabian Horse Youth Association (AHYA) where she served as Vice President in 2011. While Harrington seems to have a quite demeanor, she is hardly a silent leader and worked diligently to get sport horse under saddle classes added to the Youth Nationals class list in 2011. Harrington’s idea proved to be a good one as the first-ever purebred sport horse under saddle class had enough entries to require elimination rounds. Harrington’s success in the show ring reflects her love for the hunter and sport horse divisions where she earned two unanimous Championships, one Reserve Championship and three Top Ten’s at the 2011 Youth Nationals in sport horse under saddle, hunter hack, hunter seat equitation and working hunter classes. At the regional level in 2011 Harrington cleaned up with six Championships, [...]

Exciting news for ALL RSNC members wishing to earn AQHA points on their Quarter Horse! With the new Partner Alliance with AQHA, producers can now co-sanction the Open and Youth Divisions.
The 2012 National Reined Cow Horse Association Celebration of Champions began Saturday, January 28. The Celebration of Champions is one of the NRCHA’s premier events – and there are actually three different competitions held during the nine days of competition. Along with the Circle Y Ranch Derby, the Celebration of Champions also plays host to the NRCHA World Championship Show presented by John Deere, and the NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman. Going into the final leg of competition of the National Reined Cow Horse Association Circle Y Ranch Derby, Shawn Hays felt some trepidation. He had just seen Lyn Anderson and Tuckers Smart Cat take over the Open division lead with an impressive 152 in the cow work for a 444 composite. “I didn’t know if we could be the 150 that we needed to win, just because it’s so hard to get cattle that mark that high,” he said of the score he’d need to mark on CGS Starscommand to win the title. “But we drew a good cow down the fence, and he’s always good there.” Hays and the 5-year-old cow horse marked a 151. That resulted in two championships – the Open and Intermediate Open! The two wins [...]

The Only Extended Release Gastric Support Product That Neutralizes Stomach Acid, Balances Stomach pH and Provides Lost Electrolytes It’s not easy for your horse to perform at optimal levels when his stomach is in turmoil. Performance horse owners know that digestive upset are a widespread problem – often aggravated by lifestyle and schedule changes – and can lead to a less than stellar performance. Clinical studies demonstrate that an astounding 93 percent of racing thoroughbreds and 63 percent of other performance horses have a high incidence of digestive upset. Level pHT Extended Release Gastric Support was developed for the special needs of performance horses. The exclusive extended release formula balances stomach acid and stomach pH for more than 12 hours*.
