After their riders finished third, sixth and seventh individually in the Endurance World Championships, presented by Meydan, the United Arab Emirates today accepted their team gold medals in the Main Stadium at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. The UAE team’s total time (23:53:36) was nearly 55 minutes faster than silver medalist France (24:49:46), while Germany surprised the world by claiming the bronze medal (25:34:16). It was Germany’s first medal in endurance at a World Equestrian Games. The UAE team members were HE Sheikh Hamdan Mohammed Al Maktoum, HE Sheikh Majid Mohammed Al Maktoum, and Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum. They had trained in Newmarket, England, to prepare for the World Games, because the grass training gallops and the climate there are far more similar to Lexington than Dubai, said Jaume Punti-Dachs, one of the team’s trainers. The French team members were Sarah Chakil, Virgnie Atger and Cecile Miletto Mosti. The German team members were Gabriela Foster, Sabrina Arnold and Belinda Hitzler. HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the individual silver medalist, elected not to be a member of his country’s team for these World Games. He said before the ride began that he’d made this decision because [...]

Forty years ago, endurance riding was in its infancy, and riders took to the trails wearing blue jeans and cowboy hats on horses sporting Western saddles and leather halters, carrying hand-drawn maps of the 50- and 100-mile trails. Today, horses sport lightweight saddles and BiothaneR tack, and riders in LycraR tights carry GPS devices to help them stay on the trail. Very few endurance rides have adjusted to the changes and are still giving riders the opportunity to challenge the same trails as they were years ago, but the Big Horn 100 – born back in 1971 – continues to be one of the premier rides in the country. Held each summer since 1971 near Shell, Wyoming, the Big Horn 100 predates the founding of endurance’s national organization, the American Endurance Ride Conference. Ride organizers and participants are looking forward to the ride’s 40th anniversary this year when the ride starts promptly at 4:00 a.m. on July 10, then winds through 100 miles of BLM, U.S. Forest Service and privately owned forest, roads and trails through the Bighorn National Forest. Participants have 24 hours to traverse the historic trail. Terry Perkins, the ride’s co-founder, said, “I’m very proud and happy [...]

Cavallo Contribution Captures the Win Competitive Rider Uses Simple Hoof Boots The BC Competitive Trail Rider’s Association held its Annual Awards ceremony on October 23, 2009. Nicole Vaugeois of Nanaimo won the Top BC Lightweight rider with her unregistered Quarter Horse El Nino. Competitive trail riding is a long distance riding sport where horse and rider teams navigate over a variety of terrains in a set period of time. The sport is all about the horses’ fitness, conditioning and overall health. Last year, BCCTRA approved the use of hoof boots for horses during competition. “This rule change has allowed riders more flexibility in their hoof care options during competition” states Vaugeois. It is not uncommon now to see horse and rider teams using Cavallo boots on the rides for primary hoof care or as a back up to a pulled shoe. “The products and contributions that Cavallo makes to the horse world are in line with the values of BCCTRA, and we are very appreciative of their support for our sport” said Vaugeois. “I am a huge fan of the Simple Boots that Cavallo Horse & Rider makes” says Nicole. She has used Cavallo boots on her horses for many [...]

AERC’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS The premier event of the American Endurance Ride Conference, the annual National Championship ride, proved to be a weekend of celebration in Northern California on September 11 and 13. At the site of the annual Patriot’s Day ride in Greenville, California, competitors arrived from all over the western U.S. and Canada to compete for AERC’s top prizes. The 100-mile championship ride, held Friday, was won handily by Lindsay Graham, a fourth-year veterinary student at the University of California at Davis. Riding Chris Martin’s 7-year-old chestnut Arabian gelding, Monk, Graham finished the technical course in nine hours and 58 minutes, 35 minutes ahead of second-place finisher Brad Green of Auburn, California, riding Pawnee, his 10-year old Arabian cross gelding. “I was planning on just finishing in the required FEI COC time,””said Graham, referring to the Fédération Équestre Internationale’s certificate of capability time of twelve hours and twenty minutes. “We passed people in the vet checks as Monk pulsed down immediately at every check.” “I kept a very steady pace all day. People always passed me downhill, but I passed them uphill, and let him canter on the flats,” said Graham. “He has a very easy big canter and [...]

The Nation’s Best Equine Endurance Athletes Race in Stillwater For the first time ever, the Arabian Horse Association (AHA) will combine the National Endurance Ride and National Competitive Trail Ride into one week of exciting competition for the National Distance Championship set for October 27-31 at Lake Carl Blackwell in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Competition begins Tuesday, October 27, with the AHA National Championship 100-Mile Endurance Ride, coupled with three coinciding American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC) sanctioned rides. The AHA National Championship competitive trail ride (CTR) spans two days, October 28-29. The last two days of competition will feature the AHA National Championship 50-Mile Endurance Ride on October 30 with Open rides on October 31. The Ozark Country Endurance Riders (OCER) will host a Halloween special, Witch Way Ride, on October 31. Distance riding combines stamina, endurance and athleticism in ways few other equine disciplines do. Endurance rides are best described as a cross-country contest of 50 or more miles. Horse and rider cover a measured course within a specified maximum time at any pace they choose. Near every 20-mile mark, horses are examined by a veterinarian who has the power to pull a horse from the competition or put a hold [...]

Hoof Boot Success at The 2009 Tevis Cup EasyCare owner Garrett Ford described the The 2009 Tevis Cup as a “sink or swim” moment for the company. Riding a wave of success generated by this year’s release of 4 revolutionary new hoof boot designs, Garrett attended Tevis this year not only to compete, but also to put EasyCare’s name on the line. He and several company representatives were at the staging camp at Robie Flats in the days leading up to the race, fitting and applying Easyboot Glue-On hoof boots for anyone competing in the race, free of charge. The idea was to show the endurance riding world that these new hoof boots were up to the challenge of what is regarded as the toughest endurance race in the country, if not the world. In all, 19 horses were fitted with Easyboot Glue-Ons. The Tevis Cup is a 100-mile endurance race that takes horse and rider through some of the most breathtaking and rugged terrain on the planet. The course starts before dawn at Robie Park, high in the mountains above Lake Tahoe, and finishes 100 long miles away in Auburn, CA. The fastest riders finish around the 17 hour [...]

Numerous competitors will be riding in Easyboot Gloves and Easyboot Glue-Ons over bare hooves including the 2007 winner, Jeremy Reynolds.
