Standing-room only crowd fills John Justin Arena to see Mustangs in action. The overflowing crowd packed the John Justin Arena on January 22 to see the finals to Mustang Magic, and the Mustangs and trainers did not disappoint. The crowd was moved to a standing ovation on numerous occasions during the exciting freestyle finals of Mustang Magic, which was presented by the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo and Sam’s Club. Teryn Muench of Marietta, Oklahoma, and Maverick, the Mustang he has trained since September, won the top prize with a performance that wowed the judges and the crowd with flying lead changes and by roping a calf. Nineteen trainers and Mustangs competed in the event and vied for their share of the $10,000 purse. Muench received a check for $3,500 for the victory and Maverick, a 6-year-old red roan gelding gathered from the Black Rock Range East in Nevada, received a new home. Maverick was adopted by Tony Riley of Texas for $2,600. With just more than 100 days to not only gentle but also teach the Mustangs basic riding maneuvers, the trainers once again displayed their incredible horsemanship skills. Mustang Magic is an invitational event for Mustang trainers [...]

BLM Mustang Also Makes His Mark The Grand Championship at Dressage at Devon is always a nail biter, but this year’s group of champions really impressed with incredible movement, type and conformation as they competed for this big award. To the thrill of the crowd, two beautiful mares trotted away with the show’s most coveted ribbons during the breed division. Wearing the championship neck sash once again was Iron Spring Farm’s Rabiola, the gorgeous KWPN mare who has won more than ten championships at the show over the years. Finishing with the Reserve Grand Championship was Dazzle, a two-year-old mare by Jazz, who also has quality gaits and charisma. Rabiola kicked off her day by winning the Four-Year-Old and Older Broodmares class. She then trotted to the Mare and Mature Horse Championships before clinching the title of Grand Champion. The mare, by Metall out of Fabiola by Zadok, is not only frequently a big winner at DAD, she’s also a mom of several Dressage at Devon winners. “She’s the Queen,” said a very happy Mary Alice Malone, owner of Rabiola. “This was really amazing. I’m really lucky to own her.” Dazzle, bred by Victoria Lamas Wanner and owned by Taylor [...]

Onyx A graduate of the Extreme Mustang Makeover is snatching admiration from college students in the Intercollegiate Dressage Association. A show was hosted by Florida State University January 23rd and 24th where the mustang, Onyx, was a true star. Almost a year to the date after first meeting Onyx, a wild Nevada Mustang, Onyx was handily carrying riders through dressage tests at a competition where colleges compete against each other to via for spots for Dressage Nationals. In IDA, schools from each region converge to compete against one another to national points. The interesting thing about IDA is that students do not ride their own horses. Visiting schools, and a lottery provides horses, or random draw selects the horse that the student is to ride. The student is allowed 10 minutes to “warm-up” their unfamiliar mount, and then head straight to the show ring to perform their dressage test in front of the judge, with their respective schools routing them on. It takes a special horse to be used for IDA, both talented and well trained, but also a horse with a heart of gold and excellent patience to handle being ridden in a show environment with unfamiliar riders. Three [...]

Tennessee Thunder, a five-year-old sorrel American Mustang, proved he was at the top of his game when trainer Chase Dodd leapt from a small trampoline, onto the gelding’s back and then stuffed a basketball into a hoop to a standing ovation to take the win and $3,500 at the second Mustang Magic competition in Fort Worth, Texas. If the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo ever wondered if more people could be stuffed into its John Justin arena, that question was answered January 23 when an estimated crowd of 3,000 spilled over into aisles and stairwells in the 1,900-seat venue to experience the Magic of the Mustang. Mustang Magic, powered by Wheaties FuelTM with support from OmniAmerican Bank, featured 10 trainers who, for the previous 120 days, gentled 10 American Mustangs they received in September to compete for the $10,000 purse and the title of Mustang Magic champion. Dodd captured the judges attention early on in the compulsory round when he “led” Tennessee Thunder through the in hand course without a halter, then proceeded to perform a flawless riding pattern. He repeated the same hands-free technique following the slam-dunk in the freestyle as he moved the horse, wild only [...]

2009 ends with more fans and adoptions than ever before The Mustang Heritage Foundation (MHF) closed 2009 with numbers exceeding all expectations, indicating the American public’s strong affinity for the cause of wild horse adoption. With more than 1,700 horses adopted through the Extreme Mustang Makeover (EMM) and the Foundation’s Trainer Incentive Program (TIP) since 2007, Executive Director Patti Colbert says the program is the “real deal.” “The Mustang Heritage Foundation is proud to have accomplished its 2009 goal of close to 1,000 wild horse adoptions in these challenging economic times,” she said. “Our supporters and sponsors have impacted the lives of wild horses and the incredible horse trainers that gentle them and help get them adopted.” Supported in 2009 by corporate partners Pfizer Animal Health (formerly Fort Dodge), Western Horseman, Martin Saddlery, Smith Brothers, Daily 72, Roper Apparel, Vetericyn and Equestrian Singles, the Foundation was also strongly partnered with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in placing adoptive horses housed in holding facilities. Ten 2009 Extreme Mustang Makeover events were produced in eight states and included 30 unique days of competition and nine adoption auctions seen by more than 50,000 spectators and equine enthusiasts in the past year.
Wilson takes second win this season Georgetown, TX – Without a doubt, the Mountain Valley Extreme Mustang Makeover, held in conjunction with the Heber City Cowboy Poetry Gathering November 7, was the most original of the 2009 season. It was, however, the combination of a faultless go-round and her trademark showmanship in the finals that took Wylene Wilson of Queen Creek, Ariz., to the top of the leader board for the second time this year, but with a different mustang named Gator. While the Norco Extreme Trail Challenge held in May offered majestic hills and terrain, what trainers faced inside the arena at the Wasatch Events Center in Heber City, Utah, was nothing short of spectacular with a running waterfall and a 15 foot hill to climb, not to mention chickens, a log pull, outhouse and tumbleweeds. Facing flowing water and hills was just another day at the proverbial park for Wilson, whose training ground in Queen Creek is surrounded by picturesque canyons. Gator barely batted an eye at the go-round obstacles as he gamely pulled a log across a bridge and picked up correct leads maneuvering around a crate filled with crowing chickens. The brown gelding then waited patiently [...]

The four-year-old sorrel gelding didn’t even have a name, just a number that identified him as one of 30,000 wild horses under the care of the BLM, that provides wild horses to the Mustang Heritage Foundation for adoption through its Extreme Mustang Makeover competitions around the country.
