Vesicular stomatitis (VS) has recently been detected in two horses in New Mexico. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed the infection of two horses in Otero County. The horses were sampled after vesicular lesions were observed on both animals. Testing at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) confirmed the virus as the New Jersey serotype. The New Mexico Livestock Board (NMLB) is working with APHIS on an epidemiological investigation. The original premise of five horses remains under quarantine. No new cases of Vesicular Stomatitis have been identified in the immediate area or elsewhere in the state of New Mexico. A NMLB veterinarian and inspectors inspected all livestock within a one mile radius of the index premise. There were 128 horses and 24 head of cattle examined on 18 premises. According to the New Mexico state veterinarian, based on the current findings of Vesicular Stomatitis in the area: All livestock leaving Otero County will be required to have an inspection by a veterinarian within 7 days of transport if they are traveling to a public event such as roping, racing, breeding or other forms of public exhibition or traveling interstate. At the NRHA Futurity Sale in December, Red Roses In Tinseltown, a 2011 filly by Hollywoodstinseltown will be sold, with all proceeds going to Rein In Cancer. Ron McRorie has generously transfered ownership of the filly out of a money-earning daughter of Colonel San Peppy (x Colonel Freckles) to Rein in Cancer for the fund raiser “I was inspired by Jordan and Taylor Larson’s generous hearts during the Rein In Cancer fundraiser at last year’s Futurity,” Ron McRorie, who has spearheaded the fundraiser said, in reference to the auction of the saddle that Jordan won the 2010 NRHA Futurity in. “I have had family members affected by this dreadful disease – one as young as eight years old.
Flashback Too Robin, Miss Handy and Rhapped Four Pleasure are competing in the upper levels of dressage. Three American Paint Horses are steadily climbing the upper-level dressage ranks, proving that this traditional discipline can be mastered by an untraditional horse-and with style. Flashback Too Robin came to Meris Greges of Athens, Alabama, as an unstarted 2-year-old in 2003, testing the mettle of Greges and other barnmates with unruly behavior both under saddle and while being handled on the ground. But, Greges stuck with him on the advice of her trainer, Eugene Abello, and this year the pair recently made their Fourth Level debut. They were featured in the April 30 The Chronicle Of The Horse article “Non-Traditional Breeds Defy the Odds in Dressage.” The colorful 2001 sorrel overo gelding is sired by roping stallion Tru Too Robin and out of the Thoroughbred mare Queen Of Coyle. “Flash” has earned 40 PAC credits and Certificate of Recognition for dressage through APHA’s Paint Alternative Competition program. “Flash has surpassed my wildest expectations and has taken me with him,” Greges said. “I love it when I’m asked what kind of warmblood he is-I proudly say he is an American Paint Horse.” Moving quickly [...]

The National Reining Breeders Classic Open Finals were held Saturday, April 21, at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy, Texas. The field of 33 finalists posted high score after high score – in fact, the average of all the scored runs in the finals was over 223! National Reining Horse Association Leading Rider Shawn Flarida claimed his fourth NRBC Open title on Spooks Gotta Whiz, a 5-year-old stallion by Spooks Gotta Gun out of Prettywhizprettydoes. Flarida and Spooks Gotta Whiz laid down a 236 to win the Open title. During the awards ceremony, Flarida was presented with an oversized check for $75,000, a year’s use of a four horse trailer from Twin Cities Featherlite, a saddle sponsored by Pard’s Western Shop, a Gist Silversmiths buckle, Rios of Mercedes boots, a Catena watch from Catena USA, a Whisper Bit, and product from Santa Cruz Biotechnologies Animal Health and SmartPak. Flarida and owner Michelle Anne Kimball also took home the signature blue NRBC crystal as well as other NRBC memorabilia. While many other horse and rider teams have been together for years, the NRBC was actually Flarida’s and Spooks Gotta Whiz’s debut reining! “I got him in January, and this was [...]

The National Reining Breeders Classic Non Pro Finals on Friday, April 20, were arguably the best in the event’s 15-year history. No wonder – the 182 entries broke the record for the largest Non Pro ever. The average of all the scored runs in the finals was an astounding 218.5! Four-time NRBC Non Pro Champion Mandy McCutcheon, of Aubrey, Texas, added both the Championship and Reserve Championship to her list of career accomplishments. She competed first as draw eight on Shiney Enterprise. When NRBC Announcer Jayson Jackson announced the score of 227.5, the crowd inside the Great Southwest Equestrian Center went wild – sure that the Championship run had just been made. But McCutcheon had another bullet in her gun – a 5-year-old mare named Always Gotyer Gunsup. McCutcheon and Always Gotyer Gunsup executed the first sliding stop to perfection, and held that standard throughout the run. The judges rewarded the pair a 231 and solidified McCutcheon’s fifth NRBC title. “When I’m competing, I try to take the run apart. I do one maneuver at a time and then I forget about it. I know when I’ve made a mistake, but my mind is always on the next part.” McCutcheon [...]

With more than $80,000 in National Cutting Horse Association lifetime earnings, American Paint Horse A Cat Named Sue broke a record while winning three championships at the NCHA Eastern Nationals, which was March 5-16 in Jackson, Mississippi. The 12-year-old sorrel solid Paint-bred gelding is by all-time leading cutting horse sire High Brow Cat (QH) and out of Merada Hickory Sue. On March 11, A Cat Named Sue pulled double duty winning the Junior Youth and Senior Youth championships, which is the first time a horse has won both Youth titles at the Eastern Nationals. Matthew Dedden of Burlington, Kentucky, rode the gelding, who is owned by his sister Chloe, to a 221 to win the Junior Youth title while Jackie Funk of Elk City, Oklahoma, guided A Cat Named Sue to a 220 for the Senior Youth win. On March 16, Dedden and A Cat Named Sue returned to split the victory for the $50,000 Amateur with Aubrey Pigg of Collinsville, Alabama, on Royals Magnificat (QH). They both marked a 219 and each earned nearly $6,000 for the split win. A Cat Named Sue wasn’t only the only American Paint Horse to do well at the Eastern Nationals.
The Unwanted Horse Coalition’s (UHC) Operation Gelding program starts the year with three Operation Gelding clinics completed in March. With the help of the Kentucky Horse Council (KHC), the Santa Rosa County Horse Assistance Council (SRCHAC), and the All American Miniature Horse Club (AAMHC), the UHC was able to assist 32 stallions in just 15 days. The UHC’s Operation Gelding program has aided in the gelding of 406 stallions to date. The program, which was first launched in late August 2010, is able to continue into 2012 thanks to a generous donation from Pfizer Animal Health. Operation Gelding is designed to offer funding assistance to organizations, associations, and events that wish to conduct a public gelding clinic under the name and guidelines of Operation Gelding. An organization that has completed an Operation Gelding clinic will receive funding of $50 per horse, $1,000 maximum, to aid in the costs associated with the clinic. Operation Gelding’s busy month started with a clinic hosted by the AAMC and club secretary, Amy Dalsing. On March 3rd, the AAMC was able to arrange a successful clinic in their home state of Iowa, aiding in the castration of 5 horses. “The clinic went very well. This [...]

The Lusitano proved to be an exceptional performance horse on the Florida dressage circuit in 2012, with professional riders, amateurs, and young riders all bringing home ribbons with this unique breed of horse. Interagro Lusitanos, the largest breeder of Lusitano horses in the world, sponsored the High Score Lusitano award at select shows during season to recognize the most successful Lusitanos and their riders. The Gold Coast Dressage, Wellington Classic Dressage, and International Horse Sport shows feature some of the top dressage competition in the world, and are integral competitions for international dressage riders. Many Lusitanos stood out during the show season, earning the Interagro Lusitano High Score Award with exceptional scores. Uruguai, a gorgeous black Lusitano stallion owned by Robinson Lusitanos in Louisiana, showcased the Lusitano breed’s ability to succeed at the FEI level by earning the High Score for all Lusitanos while competing in the Prix St. Georges division at the Wellington Classic Sunshine Challenge CDI in February. The 17-hand, eye-catching stallion was shown by Cherri Reiber, an accomplished international dressage rider. “I am a big fan of the Lusitano breed and they are very well suited for the FEI levels,” Reiber said. “I’ve shown a number of [...]
