After three days of tough competition involving unbelievable obstacles, screen tests, riding unfamiliar horses and working with yearling American Quarter Horses, the dust settled and three incredible horsemen remained. Dressed as Frank Sinatra and riding his American Quarter Horse Black Hope Stik without a bridle doing cow work, flying lead changes and sliding stops, Mike Major of Fawler, Colorado, wowed the crowd and the judges and won the inaugural Project Cowboy. Ben Baldus of Electra, Texas, finished second, and Mozaun McKibben of Whitesboro, Texas was third. Fort Worth, Texas, was rocking October 8-10, as more than 165 contestants competed for the Project Cowboy title and a $10,000 paycheck. Major emerged as the star after enduring three days of grueling competition that tested horsemanship ability, readiness to be in front of a camera, general horse knowledge while under fire and livestock handling skills. Major received $10,000 cash, a Martin trophy saddle and a Gist trophy buckle. He also received an invitation to appear at the 2011 Road To The Horse Legends World Championship and a 2011 Extreme Mustang Makeover event, as well as other major equine events and expos as a clinician. Jointly produced by Tootie Bland Productions, creator of the [...]

Jennifer Mosing, Maurice, Louisiana and Laura VanderVliet Eventing, Nottingham, Pennsylvania are pleased to announce that, effective August 1, 2010. VanderVliet’s eventing operations will be based at Mosing’s Sterling Silver Stables in Maurice. Mosing owns several top event horses, including Pawlow, an 11-year-old gelding competed by Will Faudree and short-listed for the U.S. squad for the World Equestrian Games this fall. She was one of the first patron and owner members of the Professional Riders Organization. With the establishment of Sterling Silver Stables, Mosing began pursuing the development of a world-class equestrian center in Louisiana. The completely renovated facility that resulted has set the stage for bringing a top professional into her operation. VanderVliet, who currently competes at the advanced level with the syndicated Mighty Mangaroo and Kathleen Overbaugh’s King Billy, has moved all her competition horses to Sterling Silver Stables and will pursue her competitive career from there. A former assistant trainer for Scott Hassler at Hilltop Farm and Phillip Dutton at True Prospect Farm, VanderVliet has operated her own eventing business since 1998. During this period she successfully competed such upper-level horses as Irish Fling, Topspin, and Warrie Hill. In her work with Mosing, VanderVliet will be responsible for [...]

Looking to become a living legend, two-time Road to the Horse champion, Chris Cox seeks to become the only competitor who will hold three buckles from the world championship of colt-starting. Competing against Pat Parelli and two-time winner Clinton Anderson, Cox hopes to be the “last man standing” at the Road to the Horse Legends in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on February 25-27, 2011. Entering the Road to the Horse arena for the first time in 2007, Cox had the formidable task of going up against two previous champions. Competing against Stacy Westfall and Clinton Anderson, Cox said he went into the competition hoping to win but also wanting to educate the crowd. “The crowd was into it. It felt good. When I picked the horse and went in there, I was the last person to catch my horse. It’s constant work. I had to stick with it. I came here with the same plan I always use to work with a horse and I stuck with it,” said Cox in a post-event interview. Cox said that he felt privileged to participate in such a great event. Named the 2007 Road to the Horse champion, he won his first buckle in a [...]

Road to the Horse Creates New General Admission Bleacher Seating With less than 50 tickets remaining for the 2011 Legends featuring Pat Parelli, Chris Cox and Clinton Anderson, Road to the Horse has announced new ticket availability. New general admission bleacher tickets will go on sale Thursday, July 29 at 9 am at www.roadtothehorse.com. Bleacher seating will be $75. An excellent value, each ticket will admit one person into the World Championship of Colt-Starting on February 25-27, 2010. Providing first come, first serve seating during the event, these tickets are limited. “To our surprise and excitement, only 50 tickets are left for the 2011 Road to the Horse, and those tickets that are left are in the exclusive Road to the Horse Nation seating block. We just couldn’t let the doors close yet with so many fans still clamoring to get in, so we created more space by adding bleachers inside the coliseum. This will allow so many more people to attend, cheer for their favorite clinician and be immersed in natural horsemanship!” says Tootie Bland, owner and producer of Road to the Horse. New in 2010, Road to the Horse fans have been given the opportunity to join the [...]

$100,000 offered to more than 100 trainers The iconic American Mustang will take center stage August 13-14 as more than 100 trainers hope to turn their adoption of a wild horse into a $50,000 win during the $100,000 Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover to be held in Fort Worth, Tex. The Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover is the richest wild horse competition in history and is modeled after the highly successful Extreme Mustang Makeover begun in 2007. However, unlike the Extreme Mustang Makeover where trained horses are made available to the public for adoption after the event, adoption of the competition horses was required prior to the event. “Another big difference was that this group of mustangs were older, at six years old, than the usual three to four years old we work with,” said Mustang Heritage Foundation (MHF) Executive Director Patti Colbert. “Older horses are generally harder to adopt and are usually headed for long-term holding at this age, so the Supreme Extreme was created to add value to those older horses.” A total of 108 wild horses gathered from the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) (HMA) herd management areas were placed during a televised adoption event hosted by the Mustang [...]

Adiva – Winner of 2009 Rescue Horse Training Challenge Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society Announces the Second Annual Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge Last year was the first year Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society (BEHS) held the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge – and it was a great success! Half of the horses who participated in the Challenge were adopted not long after the Challenge. Too often we hear that horses in rescues are “used up” or “useless” and the Challenge lets us show just how wrong those claims are. The Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge is a competition in which volunteer foster homes and professional trainers work with a Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society foster horse for three months (starting in mid-July 2010) and will show off at the Challenge at the 2010 Bluebonnet Horse Expo on October 16, 2010. The goals of the Challenge are to: * Introduce the public to talented rescue horses * Showcase the training abilities of Bluebonnet foster homes * Produce horses who are ready to go to work for their adopters The Challenge is open to any BEHS member who applies to foster and is approved, as well as professional trainers whose property is inspected and [...]

8-Time World Champion Team Roper, Rich Skelton, teamed up with 2-time Road to the Horse Champion, Chris, Cox for a Team Roping and Horsemanship Seminar, April 12 14. More than 30 students from several states came to improve both their horsemanship and team roping skills. Their levels ranged from beginner to a #7 heeler. Participants included World Champion All Around Cowboys Larry Mahan and Chris Lybbert. The unique training partnership developed when Cox sought heeling instruction from Skelton. Chris Cox has been ranch roping most of his life, and recently began competing in the USTRC and other ropings as a header. This summer, he entered the prestigious Reno Invitational Team Roping, heeling for former World Champion Jack Roddy. Rich Skelton has always believed that good horsemanship is the basic foundation for successful roping. The first morning, students saddled up and roped live cattle so Chris could evaluate horsemanship skills, and Rich could determine the ropers performance level. That afternoon, it was dummy time for both headers and heelers. While Rich Skelton won 8 World Championships as a heeler, he is well qualified to teach headingafter all, he did travel with Speed Williams for years! Ground instruction for both headers and [...]
