Event hosts more than 7,000 teams from four countries The Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping concluded today at the State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City, in solid fashion, offering $3.67 million in prize money and $625,000 in prizes to 7,032 teams. Produced by the United States Team Roping Championships (USTRC), the world’s leading team roping organization based in Stephenville, Texas, the Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping exceeded all expectations. From 15-year-old Wesley Thorp of Throckmorton, Texas, who won more than $65,000, to the Connecticut team of Tyler and Cody Christensen of Guilford, who had the roping of their life to win the reserve in the #10 and split $49,000, the Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping was filled with stories of euphoric success and bitter disappointment as the competition rolled through nine sun-filled days. “I think most people in the competition segment of the horse industry would agree that the economy is still wreaking havoc, but this Finals proved that team ropers are a community of people very engaged and passionate about their sport,” said USTRC President Kirk Bray. “For 21 years, this event has served the industry as a true National Finals where ropers [...]

Mader-Hayden and Thorp Snag $93,500 Win He sat by himself, if only for a moment, before the crush of people made their way into the Shoot Out Winner’s Circle. He had sat there before, with one of his other buddies, but this time it was different. He’d just won more than $46,000 and sitting there alone, he seemed a bit stunned. “But I’m excited,” said Wesley Thorp, grinning. “That was a lot of fun.” Yes, fun is one way to describe winning the #11 Shoot Out at the Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping being held in Oklahoma City through October 31. After all, with the nearly $23,000 the high school freshman had already won at the 2010 Cinch USTRC National Fincommunity known for its deep cowboy ranching traditions. Equally stunned, but definitely more emotional, was his partner Jamie Mader-Hayden of Stephenville, whose tears of happiness spoke of her hard work to reach this level. “My dad (Craig) and I have been working toward this for years and I’m sort of in shock,” she said as she loosened her cinch. “God has really blessed me so much this week and my family has been so supportive.” The duo, who [...]

Star Crossed Ropers Take #12 Shoot Out Last Minute Replacement Nets $76,900 win Bach and Thompson Win $76,900 As a journ alist, it’s easy to fall into the trap of assuming where a particular story might go. Such is the case with Peggy Bach of Milsap, Texas, who partner B.J. Thompson took the #12 Shoot Out at theCInch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping October 26 to win $76,900. Married to a famous roper – might go there. First woman to win at the 2010 Cinch National Finals of Team Roping. A good possibility. But then the questions start and the real story emerges. For Peggy, married to and mother of some pretty darned good team ropers, coming to the NFTR is usually filled with taking care of them and not so much about roping for her. As a matter of fact, she didn’t know until Tuesday night at about 10 p.m. that she would even be in the #12 Shoot Out. That’s when the proverbial stars began to align. B.J. Thompson of Pitkin, La., had a problem, but one problem he doesn’t have is choosing the right women to rope with. Roping with “Miss Jacque,” as he calls one [...]

Louisiana Team Takes $81,000 win What is it about 13? Long reviled as an unlucky number, it seems that myth doesn’t hold true for the Louisiana team of Natie Johnson and Cody Hogan. That goes double for Natie since he elected to rope with a 13-year-old eighth grader to win the #13 Shoot Out, pocketing $40,500 for himself of the $81,000 championship prize. “He’s a good roper,” Johnson said. Simple, but true. Hogan had equally as much faith in his partner, Johnson. “I thought this run would shape up pretty good and my partner would do his job and I would do mine,” he said. As the first high-call back, the duo needed a rather wide margin of 10.9 to take the win, especially after second high-call back Barrie Smith and Billy Bob Brown missed their chance. Johnson and Hogan didn’t waste any time, however, roping in a time of 7.59 to win. With Mom and Dad, and two admiring little brothers looking on, Hogan, of Pelican, seemed to handle the crush of people in the Shoot Out Winner’s circle with a certain aplomb, fielding questions from two reporters and Ferron Lucero for the interview like a pro. But he [...]

Through five rounds of competition, three teams continued to stand out in the Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping U.S. Open Championships held October 24 in Oklahoma City, Okla. Father and son team David and Ryan Motes, of Tolar and Weatherford, Tex., respectively, were remarkably consistent throughout the day, while another Texas duo, Luke Brown of Morgan Mill and Martin of Stephenville kept the competition constantly looking over their cantle. But it was former World Champion Chad Masters of Clarksville, Tenn., and partner Jake Corkill of Lipan, Tex., who brought the heat in the short round to capture the US Open Championship and the top check of $71,600 for the team. Roping in a time of 44.52 on six head, Masters and Corkill had to follow a smokin’ run by the Motes’, needing a 7.68 to take the win; just “another practice run,” as described by the announcer. Masters broke from the box swinging and landed a sweet head loop with Corkill tracking close, laying down a loop that swept the steer off his feet. It was the thriller the crowd of thousands had been hoping for and the paycheck that Masters and Corkill depended on. “This is how [...]

Being the first to take a big win and add in the fact that it includes a purse of more than a quarter million . . . well, you just have to take a big gulp. With a purse of more than $279,000 up for the taking in the #15 Shoot Out at the Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping, placing can be a good deal, but taking the top paycheck of $71,000 can be life-changing. The team of Drew Horner and Brady Norman survived four grueling rounds defeating 339 other teams to take the top spot. Coming into the short round as the 2nd high call back, Horner and Norman played the game of keep calm and have a little faith. “God made us winners and we shouldn’t doubt that,” said Horner. “He let it happen for us, no doubt.” Roping in a time of 37.73 on five steers, the duo won total earnings of $71,000, quite a take for a college student and an 8th grader. “This is my first day and it’s been good so far,” said Norman, who is home schooled in Springer, Okla., and was second in the Shoot Out in 2009. “We’ll just [...]

Ranks Second Overall in Single Event Payouts With more than $27 million paid out in prize money in 2009, the United States Team Roping Championships is poised to bring millions to the table in 2010. Each year USTRC sanctions and affiliates more than 400 events nation wide. Included in these events are seven Regional Finals paying a cumulative $2 million and its National Finals of Team Roping (NFTR) set to offer more than $4 million October 23-31 in Oklahoma City. There has been an evolution in rodeo over the past decade or so, with sport disciplines splintering into specific event categories and drawing a totally dedicated fan base. USTRC was among the first to take its sport into a powerhouse of prize money with rules and regulations that sharpened the sport and its professionalism. “When USTRC was formed in 1989, its purpose was to get ropers classified in a ratings system in order to even the playing field and develop a set of rules that would apply across the board,” said USTRC President Kirk Bray. “Developing a spectator base was not a priority at the time, but over the past 20 years, fans have come to see team roping as [...]
