The first-ever American Quarter Horse Association Ranching Heritage Challenge will be held January 13, 2012, as part of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo in Fort Worth, Texas. The inaugural show will be held as an entry-fee event and will include $10,000 in added money. Open-level exhibitors and non-pros will be able to test their ranch-bred horses against other ranch-bred horses in a class that will show off their reining, roping and cow-handling abilities. “The Ranching Heritage Challenge is part of AQHA’s push to recognize the solid ranch horses the breed was built on,” said Jim Bret Campbell, AQHA senior director of marketing and publications. “Horses bred by AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders will be eligible for the contest, whether the owner is a rancher or not. Going forward, eligible ranches will nominate foals to the Ranching Heritage Challenge program, but for the first event in Fort Worth, competitors will only pay an entry fee. We’re excited to partner with Fort Worth on this great addition to their Heritage Weekend. I can’t think of a better place to kick off the Challenge events.” The 2012 event will not require nominations and will be open to all horses that were bred [...]

The crowd at Rodeo Austin’s Wild West Show was buzzing with anticipation as The Lone Star Vaulters warmed up for their first show at this year’s event. Curious spectators watched in amazement as dancing horseback riders showcased the ancient art of Equestrian Vaulting. As the performance began, the announcer gave the audience a history lesson about the daring spectacle held in the Wild West Show arena. Recognized as one of the seven equestrian disciplines, Equestrian Vaulting dates back as early as the Ancient Greeks and moves throughout history appearing again in Native American cultures. The Lone Star Vaulters dazzled fairgoers by effortlessly moving on their sturdy horses and showing off grace and flexibility with handstands, aerial flips and stunning dismounts. They even performed a couple of tricks with up to three riders on one horse using each other to maintain their balance. Once a National Vaulting Champion, founder and coach of the Lone Star Vaulters, Rosie Brown explains that Equestrian Vaulting, while strengthening the body and improving balance, also promotes a healthy self-confidence. Always emphasizing safety first, Brown encourages individuals to come take classes and experience Equestrian Vaulting first hand. The Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo, a 501 (c)(3) [...]

Standing-room only crowd fills John Justin Arena to see Mustangs in action. The overflowing crowd packed the John Justin Arena on January 22 to see the finals to Mustang Magic, and the Mustangs and trainers did not disappoint. The crowd was moved to a standing ovation on numerous occasions during the exciting freestyle finals of Mustang Magic, which was presented by the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo and Sam’s Club. Teryn Muench of Marietta, Oklahoma, and Maverick, the Mustang he has trained since September, won the top prize with a performance that wowed the judges and the crowd with flying lead changes and by roping a calf. Nineteen trainers and Mustangs competed in the event and vied for their share of the $10,000 purse. Muench received a check for $3,500 for the victory and Maverick, a 6-year-old red roan gelding gathered from the Black Rock Range East in Nevada, received a new home. Maverick was adopted by Tony Riley of Texas for $2,600. With just more than 100 days to not only gentle but also teach the Mustangs basic riding maneuvers, the trainers once again displayed their incredible horsemanship skills.
