Spectators of the Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity and Show enjoyed a spectacular display of horsemanship and skill during the Billingsley Ford Open Futurity Finals on Saturday night. The show, billed as “Where the Finest Go First,” lived up to its moniker, as several high scores were posted. When announcer Wayne Wise declared that two-time SWRHA Futurity Champion Dell Hendricks had piloted Cache Of Jewels to a 229, the cheers could be heard well outside of the Hardy Murphy Coliseum. But just three horses later, 2010 National Reining Horse Association Futurity Champion Jordan Larson and Tinseltown Wimpy also marked a 229. While the riders had the option of a run-off, the two agreed to be Co-Champions. Each received a check for $15,418, and flipped for prizes which included a custom SWRHA Golf Cart, an NRHA Lawson trophy, and Anderson Bean boots. “They’re just 3-year-olds, and the NRHA Futurity in Oklahoma City is in the near future, so we want to save them,” noted Larson. Larson has ridden “Tinseltown,” by Wimpys Little Step out of Downtown Tinseltown, for almost a year. “Kyle Shaw rode her as a 2-year-old and did a really good job. Her owner, Ron McRorie, sent her to [...]

Patrick Flaherty left the Hardy Murphy Coliseum in Ardmore, Oklahoma, three titles and $12,101 richer. The Arizona trainer had ridden Golden Secret Weapon to win the Southwest Reining Horse Association Billingsley Open Futurity Levels 1, 2, and 3. Flaherty and Golden Secret Weapon, by Easy Hollywood Buck out of Tardys Golden Dance, competed in the first set of Open Finals for Levels 1-3, marking a 220. That score clinched the Level 1 and 2 Championship. “She was pretty good everywhere. She really locked in and was just perfect. She did everything with a draped rein,” Flaherty said. “She really ran and drug her butt – that’s where she’s really good. You can push her as hard as you want.” But there were nine other Open Level 3 entries who also qualified for the Level 4 Open, so when Scott McCutcheon and BH Is Packin Heat also marked a 222, he and Flaherty decided on a run-off. When the scores were tabulated, Flaherty and “SW” were declared the Level 3 Open Champions. Flaherty got SW to train in August of 2010. “Bobby Logan from Utah started her and owned her. Lois Whittington then bought her and I brought her along,” he [...]

With a score of 220.5, Michael Jeffcoat of Waurika, Oklahoma, claimed the Southwest Reining Horse Association’s Limited Non Pro and Non Pro Prime Time Championships, finished as the Reserve Champion of the Intermediate Non Pro, and tied for fourth in the Non Pro. He was riding Spooks Gotta Run, and won $5,244. “I thought he did very, very well,” said Jeffcoat of the Spooks Gotta Gun stallion, out of Prettywhizprettydoes. “Possum (Spooks Gotta Run) has a huge cheering section, and they were all cheering for him today.” Jeffcoat, who owns former National Reining Horse Association Non Pro Futurity and Derby Champion Jacspin, purchased Possum in September of 2010. “We were looking for a Gunner-bred colt to breed to my Jacspin mares, and we found this guy,” he explained. Possum is a full-sibling to the 2010 NRHA Futurity Open Champion Spooks Gotta Whiz. “We found this guy and purchased him from Clint and Liz Haverty.” Jeffcoat plans to show Possum at the NRHA Futurity in the Non Pro, and plans for the stallion to compete with an Open rider at the large Derbies in 2012, including the NRHA Derby and the National Reining Breeders Classic. “I thank Clint and Liz, as [...]

Friday was a big night for Breanna Sloan at the Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity and Show. She and her horse, Vintage Sail, won the WinStar World Casino Non Pro Level 1 Championship, finished Reserve in the Limited Non Pro, third in the Intermediate Non Pro, and finished tied for seventh in the Non Pro with a score of 218.5. “He’s just a really good horse – he’s super honest and true. I couldn’t ask for a better horse,” Sloan, who won $3,156, said. “People tell me I did a good job, but really, he did all the work. I just try to do him justice.” Sloan found and purchased “Gus,” by A Sparkling Vintage and out of Light Paprika, in June of his 2-year-old year. “At the time I bought him he was really green. I tried him and felt like he needed more time and work – and that was what I was looking for. I wanted something for a project,” she explained. “He’s a really kind horse, great-minded, and he’s very talented too!” Sloan, of Whitesboro, Texas, has been riding with Sebastian Petrol since February. “I give all the glory to God.
The Southwest Reining Horse Association WinStar World Casino Non Pro Futurity Championship was decided Friday, October 21. Emerging the victor in both the Non Pro and the Intermediate Non Pro was Quincy Cahill Allen. Allen piloted Conquistador Chick to a 226.5, winning a custom SWRHA Golf Cart, a Bob’s Custom Saddle, a National Reining Horse Association Lawson trophy as well as an NRHA Morrison trophy, and two Montana Silversmiths buckles. Along with the bevy of prizes, she also took home more than $7,488. “He was great today. I was able to trust him. He came in and circled really well, and his stops were really good. That’s his big deal – he’s a huge stopper,” Cahill said of Conquistador Chick, by Conquistador Whiz and out of Dun It By Chick. The Madisonville, Texas, Non Pro didn’t believe that Conquistador Chick would make a reining horse. She purchased the gelding in October of 2010 from Skyline Ranch, although they warned her that “Chavez” was tough. “He had all the talent but was just playful. I finally just got mad and said I couldn’t do it – that it was too frustrating,” she explained. Because of that frustration, Cahill called her friend, [...]

The Reining Super Series Champions will be announced in less than a week. With three of the four legs of the series completed, the pressure is on the leaders. Those who haven’t competed in three of the events must attend the Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity and Show in Ardmore, Oklahoma – or be declared ineligible for the cash bonuses. The Reining Super Series is a conglomerate of four of the National Reining Horse Association’s largest events – and the high point Open and Non Pro exhibitor from the ancillary classes who compete in at least three of the four shows will receive a check for $10,000! The three high-point leaders of the Open have all attended two of the previous events. With 85 points, Tyrel Pole sits in first place, having attended the Ariat Tulsa Reining Classic and the Scottsdale Reining Classic. The non pro competition was stout with 167 horses and riders vying for their share of $87,500 in added money.
