The 2012 National Reined Cow Horse Association Celebration of Champions concluded Sunday, February 5, with the finals of the World’s Greatest Horseman competition. The finals – which featured ten of the most accomplished horse and rider teams in the western performance horse industry – thrilled the west Texas town. The lifetime earnings of the 10 equine athletes averaged more than $115,000 – and the combined lifetime earnings of the riders exceeded $5 million. “The finals were tough – but so were the preliminaries,” Ron Emmons, who won the Championship on Olena Oak, exclaimed. “The scores in the preliminary round would have scared you they were so high. Just being able to get through it and make the finals was an accomplishment.” Emmons and the 10-year-old cow horse were steady in the first two phases of competition, marking a 216 in the herd work and a 219.5 in the rein work. Then the pair earned the high score of the steer stopping – a 222. “I told my wife Ladona that I was going to let it hang out a little today, and every time I asked this horse for anything he gave it to me,” he explained. “He just kept [...]

The 2011 National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championship Show presented by John Deere kicked off January 30 during the Celebration of Champions in San Angelo, Texas. Although no prize money is awarded during the preliminary competition, there are thousands of dollars in added money for the finals of every event. When Jay McLaughlin qualified Shiney Sushi for the Open Bridle finals of the National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championship Show presented by John Deere, he and owner Carol Rose made a decision: if the 7-year-old cow horse won the World Championship, she would be retired. On Saturday, February 4, the flashy palomino mare left the show pen for the last time. She bested the field, which included some of the most prolific equine athletes in the industry by 2.5 points with a 436 – winning $8,106, a Bob’s Custom Saddle, a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Smart Boons, Rios of Mercedes boots from Rios of Mercedes, a vest sponsored by Gist Silversmiths, a $50 gift card from Santa Cruz Biotechnologies, a CR Morrison trophy and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion. For McLaughlin, of Gainesville, Texas, the win proved what he and Rose had never doubted – the mare [...]

The 2012 National Reined Cow Horse Association Celebration of Champions began Saturday, January 28. The Celebration of Champions is one of the NRCHA’s premier events – and there are actually three different competitions held during the nine days of competition. Along with the Circle Y Ranch Derby, the Celebration of Champions also plays host to the NRCHA World Championship Show presented by John Deere, and the NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman. Going into the final leg of competition of the National Reined Cow Horse Association Circle Y Ranch Derby, Shawn Hays felt some trepidation. He had just seen Lyn Anderson and Tuckers Smart Cat take over the Open division lead with an impressive 152 in the cow work for a 444 composite. “I didn’t know if we could be the 150 that we needed to win, just because it’s so hard to get cattle that mark that high,” he said of the score he’d need to mark on CGS Starscommand to win the title. “But we drew a good cow down the fence, and he’s always good there.” Hays and the 5-year-old cow horse marked a 151. That resulted in two championships – the Open and Intermediate Open! The two wins [...]

Reno is the biggest little city in the world, and gambling abounds. But the high-stakes contests at the glamorous casinos aren’t the only places to experience anticipation and big-time action. In fact, all the highs and lows of elation and victory can be found at the Reno Livestock Events Center during the 2011 National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity. The Futurity is the premier event for reined cow horses, with over $1 million paid out over 13 days of grueling competition, as the horses compete in herd, rein, and cow work. As exhibitors prepare their 3-year-old cow horses for the biggest competition of their careers, they undoubtedly feel the pressure. In some cases, as much money as would be paid for an average American’s home has been invested in the health, training, and preparation of these fledgling performance horses. While the stakes are high, the rewards are vast. Along with the winner’s $100,000 check, the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Championship can cement a horse’s place in history, jump-start a breeding program, and launch or revive a trainer’s career. The elite event begins tomorrow, September 20, at 8 a.m. with the Open Preliminary herd work competition. The field [...]

American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show working cow horse finalists are now eligible to show at the 2011 National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championship Show. The NRCHA board of directors voted in August to extend an invitation to the AQHA World Championship Show finalists in the working cow horse class. This action follows a previous decision by the NRCHA board to invite youth finalists from the 2011 Built Ford Tough American Quarter Horse Youth Association World Championship Show to compete at the NRCHA World Championship Show. “Our purpose in doing this was to encourage AQHA members to come and compete in the NRCHA,” said NRCHA board member Sam Rose. The NRCHA World Championship Show will be January 28 – February 5, 2012, in San Angelo, Texas. AQHA World Championship Show working cow horse finalists will be contacted after the conclusion of the AQHA World Show.
Competition Set for October 26 in Queen Creek, Arizona The National Reined Cow Horse Association Board of Directors has announced that the NRCHA Derby, originally slated for June 14-19 in Paso Robles, California, will be held at the Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre October 26-30. The NRCHA Derby was postponed as a result of the EHV-1 outbreak. “The decision to postpone the Derby was difficult. We first elected to offer full refunds to all entries that elected not to attend the event because of the outbreak. The resulting decrease in entries made it unfeasible to continue on with the show,” NRCHA President Kathy Gould explained. During the June 14 Board Meeting, the NRCHA Board of Directors considered all options for available dates and locations to reschedule the event. It was decided that the best choice would be to move the event to the Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre, in Queen Creek, Arizona. The event will begin on Wednesday, October 26, and run through Sunday, October 30. “The rescheduled Derby needed to be a stand-alone event, so that we could offer all the horse show classes along with the Limited Age Event,” noted Gould. “The NRCHA extends a huge thank you [...]

The National Reined Cow Horse Association Board of Directors met June 3 to discuss the NRCHA Derby, scheduled for June 14-19 at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, California. Earlier, the Board had adopted a full-refund policy for entries that opted not to attend due to the concern over the EHV-1 virus. Because of the ensuing substantial reduction in entries, along with the challenge involved in complying with California guidelines as a result of the EHV-1 outbreak, the Board of Directors has elected to cancel the Derby for 2011. “The NRCHA’s main concern in any situation is the welfare of our equine partners. Canceling our third largest premier event is not a decision that was made lightly,” NRCHA President Kathy Gould explained. “The NRCHA Board is currently reviewing options for rescheduling the event. Those options will be considered during the Board meeting on June 14.” Another modification that resulted from the EHV-1 outbreak is that the number of shows needed to qualify for the 2011 NRCHA World Championship Show presented by John Deere was reduced from three to two. The National Reined Cow Horse Association, now in its 62nd year, is the governing body of cow horse competition, [...]

The Non Pro titles for the 2011 National Reined Cow Horse Association Hackamore Classic were awarded on Sunday, May 1. Topping the leader board for the Non Pro was Anne Reynolds, who rode Very Shiney to a 434 composite, winning $6,135. Reynolds had originally planned to show the week before the Hackamore Classic at the National Reining Breeders Classic in Texas – but when her horse was sidelined with an injury, she made an eleventh hour decision to enter the Hackamore Classic. “I just had a couple weeks to work this horse in the hackamore. I wasn’t sure how it would work out, but he’s a fairly light and sensitive horse, so I thought he’d be ok,” she explained. “I think he can use some more time to really reach his potential, but I was pleased with him.” The pair began the competition with a 143.5 in the herd work, followed that with a 146.5 in the rein work, and finished with a 144 in the cow work. “Because we were a post-entry, we had to go last in the first set. It was a tough draw, but we got three cows cut well. He was also really good in [...]

Money earned at the event – including an Open Hackamore Championship and Reserve Championship – catapulted him past the milestone to become the Association’s newest million dollar rider. Telford won the Open Hackamore horse show class on Hes Shinettes CD, by CD Olena out of Sheza Shinette, owned by Holy Cow Performance Horses. Telford and Hes Shinettes CD marked a 149 in the rein work and a 147 in the cow work for a 296 total – good for $4,390. The pair also placed fourth in the Hackamore Classic, worth an additional $7,730. Abbey Roan, by One Time Pepto out of Stylin Jewel, marked 147 in the rein work and 148.5 in the cow work for a 295.5 total.
