The first-ever American Quarter Horse Association Ranching Heritage Challenge will be held January 13, 2012, as part of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo in Fort Worth, Texas. The inaugural show will be held as an entry-fee event and will include $10,000 in added money. Open-level exhibitors and non-pros will be able to test their ranch-bred horses against other ranch-bred horses in a class that will show off their reining, roping and cow-handling abilities. “The Ranching Heritage Challenge is part of AQHA’s push to recognize the solid ranch horses the breed was built on,” said Jim Bret Campbell, AQHA senior director of marketing and publications. “Horses bred by AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders will be eligible for the contest, whether the owner is a rancher or not. Going forward, eligible ranches will nominate foals to the Ranching Heritage Challenge program, but for the first event in Fort Worth, competitors will only pay an entry fee. We’re excited to partner with Fort Worth on this great addition to their Heritage Weekend. I can’t think of a better place to kick off the Challenge events.” The 2012 event will not require nominations and will be open to all horses that were bred [...]

Due to recent events surrounding an EHV1 Outbreak in horses across the country, the San Angelo SHOT Clinic and Show originally scheduled for May 20-21 will be re-scheduled for August 5th and 6th. Though EHV cases have not yet been identified in Texas, the extent of this outbreak is still unfolding. Major NCHA and AQHA events have been cancelled and several large Texas ranches and boarding facilities have prohibited the movement of horses in and out of their facilities. Because we do not know the full extent of this disease in our state, SHOT feels it is in the best interest of our members and their horses that this event be rescheduled. Below is a briefing from the NCHA about the current outbreak and links to more information about this deadly disease. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes our members, but the health of your horses and horses across Texas is our first priority. EHV-1 UPDATE: Tuesday May 17, 9:00 a.m. (Central Time) The NCHA continues to closely monitor the situation of reported cases of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) that were reportedly first clinically diagnosed in horses that attended the NCHA Western National Championships in Ogden, Utah conducted April 29 [...]

Bringing home national championships is second nature to Tarleton State University’s rodeo teams, but another equine-related team on campus is also making a name for itself in the competitive arena. Tarleton’s Stock Horse of Texas (SHOT) team is building their reputation as tough competitors in the collegiate and non-pro divisions. The team recently returned from competing in Abilene on March 5-7, where they finished fourth in the collegiate division. Other universities in attendance included Texas Tech University, Texas A&M University, Sam Houston State University, Stephen F. Austin University, West Texas A&M University, Clarendon Community College, New Mexico State University and Laramie County Community College. In addition to competing on a team, SHOT team members competed against almost 200 other entries for placings in the competition. Individually for the team, Nicole Kneal from Tomball, Texas, finished second in the novice all-around, third in working cow horse, second in trail, 12th in pleasure and 13th in reining on her horse Doc Hickory Dickory. Also in the novice division, Stephanie Dickson from Bells, Texas, finished 10th in pleasure on a horse her parents bred and she trained. In the limited non-pro division, Laura Pearson from Arlington, Texas, finished 10th in the working cow [...]

Show brings SHOT concept to Vernon, Texas ABILENE, TEXAS – It was rainy and muddy outside, but inside the Wilbarger County Events Center, more than 150 exhibitors and spectators enjoyed the first ever SHOT show in Vernon, Texas. The association had discussed hosting a show in the Red River Valley area, and partnered with the Archer County 4-H Horse Club to bring the event to life. “We had planned to run two arenas plus the trail outside, but when the rain moved in, we stopped the show for about 30 minutes to divide the indoor arena into two show areas,” said SHOT Executive Director Kim Lindsey. “It caused the show to run longer, but the exhibitors were very understanding.” One hundred eleven exhibitors braved the elements for the Saturday show, competing in Reining, Cowhorse, Trail and Pleasure in six different divisions. Bringing a SHOT show to this part of Texas brought in several new members and first-time exhibitors. More than 60 riders participated in the clinic, which featured world renowned trainer Chris Littlefield, as well as Ben Baldus and Jimbo Humphreys. The Wilbarger County Events Center provided a fabulous facility to get out of the elements and was well received [...]
