The Grade 1 $257,208 Graham Paint Futurity on May 29 was the richest race for Paints this year. It was an interesting one to watch this year as Rio Rojo Jessie crossed the finish line in front, but would soon be disqualified for interference. Girls Got Grip was elevated from second place to first with the new results, having finished only a neck behind her. She finished the 350-yard race with a time of 17.71 seconds. The new winner is a full sister to Paint racing’s leading money-earner, Got Country Grip. She takes home $97,743 for the win, making her dam the 2010 and lifetime leading money-earning dam with $572,709 in offspring earnings, and also the first Paint broodmare with progeny earnings over $500,000. Girls Got Grip is a 2-year-old bay solid Paint-bred filly by Country Quick Dash and out of Got A Grip, by Super De Kas AQHA. She is a full-sister to Got Country Grip, who holds five world champion titles in racing. The filly is owned by Girls Got Grip, LLC, and managed by Jamie Howard of Black Hawk, South Dakota, who owns the dam as well. The partnership is a group of Jamie’s friends who he [...]

It was announced recently that one of the leading Paint racing sires, Texas Hero, is retiring from the breeding shed. The latest development is that the horse has been given to the original breeders/owners Herb and Ginger Graham who helped make this horse a legend in the Paint racing industry on the track as well as off. Now that his final breeding year has been completed at Bowlan Farms in Oklahoma, he will spend his retirement years at the Graham’s horse farm in Gardendale, Texas. The deal was struck through a conversation between Linda Bowlan and Ginger Graham while talking about this top stallion. After Linda Bowlan mentioned the conversation to her son, attending veterinarian to Texas Hero, Chuck Bowlan, he spoke with the current owner, Buddy Albin of Denton, Texas, about the possibility of sending him to the Graham’s for retirement. “We were prepared to bring Texas Hero home to our farm,” said Albin. “But, my wife and I felt this was the right thing to do, like completing the circle for Texas Hero. We thought it was important, and we know he will have a very good life there.” Texas Hero was bred and born on the Graham’s [...]

Owners, trainers, jockeys, track personnel, and racingfans came together on May 9 to help raise $44,100 for Rein in Cancer and Ally’s House – two Oklahoma-based organizations dedicated to helping those dealing with cancer. Tough Enough to Wear Pink-Betting on a Cure, which raised $32,700 at its inaugural event in 2009, is a joint effort between Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association and Remington Park in Oklahoma City. “Knowing firsthand that a number of horse owners, trainers and personnel have had to endure cancer treatment either themselves or as a supportive loved one is an inspiration to all of us at Remington Park,” said Scott Wells, Remington Park’s President and General Manager. “Tough Enough to Wear Pink is our way of bringing awareness to and raising funds for two dynamic local organizations that exist with the sole purpose to support cancer patients and their families.” It was a sea of pink at the Mother’s Day event from track employees to race fans to even the stable ponies decked out in the color that symbolizes breast cancer awareness. To help raise funds for the charities, racehorse owners donated a percentage of their purses and made pledges while everyone arriving at Remington Park [...]

The United States Trotting Association (USTA) announced today its intention to offer support to Standardbred horses in the care and custody of animal control authorities because of neglect, abuse or abandonment. The program, to be called “Support Our Standardbreds” (SOS), will extend assistance in providing feed, veterinary and other care to Standardbred horses in the legal custody of animal control officials anywhere in the United States. “We believe this program will begin to meet two very vital needs that are either completely unmet or severely underfunded,” said USTA Executive Vice President Mike Tanner. “This is a widespread problem that affects horses whose owners have failed to care for them and government officials are left with little to no funding to step in when care has fallen to a criminally low level. We have anecdotal reports of animal control officials not able to exercise their authority to seize horses because of a lack of funds to do so. “While we recognize there are many horses in need of assistance in transitioning to a useful career, there are some programs in place to help them, for which we are grateful. That need is partially met. We saw this need as being completely [...]
