The 2012 National Reined Cow Horse Association Celebration of Champions concluded Sunday, February 5, with the finals of the World’s Greatest Horseman competition. The finals – which featured ten of the most accomplished horse and rider teams in the western performance horse industry – thrilled the west Texas town. The lifetime earnings of the 10 equine athletes averaged more than $115,000 – and the combined lifetime earnings of the riders exceeded $5 million. “The finals were tough – but so were the preliminaries,” Ron Emmons, who won the Championship on Olena Oak, exclaimed. “The scores in the preliminary round would have scared you they were so high. Just being able to get through it and make the finals was an accomplishment.” Emmons and the 10-year-old cow horse were steady in the first two phases of competition, marking a 216 in the herd work and a 219.5 in the rein work. Then the pair earned the high score of the steer stopping – a 222. “I told my wife Ladona that I was going to let it hang out a little today, and every time I asked this horse for anything he gave it to me,” he explained. “He just kept [...]

The 2011 National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championship Show presented by John Deere kicked off January 30 during the Celebration of Champions in San Angelo, Texas. Although no prize money is awarded during the preliminary competition, there are thousands of dollars in added money for the finals of every event. When Jay McLaughlin qualified Shiney Sushi for the Open Bridle finals of the National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championship Show presented by John Deere, he and owner Carol Rose made a decision: if the 7-year-old cow horse won the World Championship, she would be retired. On Saturday, February 4, the flashy palomino mare left the show pen for the last time. She bested the field, which included some of the most prolific equine athletes in the industry by 2.5 points with a 436 – winning $8,106, a Bob’s Custom Saddle, a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Smart Boons, Rios of Mercedes boots from Rios of Mercedes, a vest sponsored by Gist Silversmiths, a $50 gift card from Santa Cruz Biotechnologies, a CR Morrison trophy and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion. For McLaughlin, of Gainesville, Texas, the win proved what he and Rose had never doubted – the mare [...]

Ranch Sorting – AQHA Partner Alliance, AQHA Battle in the Saddle, & 2012 Merial RSNC National Finals July 3-10, 2012 Ranch Sorting National Championships Announces Official Partner Alliance with the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), RSNC Ranch Sorting a new event at Battle in the Saddle and new location for 2012 Merial RSNC National Finals. Exciting news for ALL RSNC members wishing to earn AQHA points on their Quarter Horse! With the new Partner Alliance with AQHA, producers can now co-sanction the Open and Youth Divisions. This will give contestants the opportunity to qualify and earn points in both associations in the same class. Starting January 1, 2012, with sanctioning approval from both associations, producers can now offer a RSNC All Levels Class and those wishing to earn AQHA points can designate their AQHA team to earn AQHA points at the same time. The AQHA Amateur class must be separate but the same co-sanctioning opportunity exists for the Youth class. The one minute time limit of the 1st round will determine the AQHA placing and the second or consecutive rounds will determine the RSNC placing. This allows the producer to draw contestants from both organizations and allows contestants to save [...]

The 2012 National Reined Cow Horse Association Celebration of Champions began Saturday, January 28. The Celebration of Champions is one of the NRCHA’s premier events – and there are actually three different competitions held during the nine days of competition. Along with the Circle Y Ranch Derby, the Celebration of Champions also plays host to the NRCHA World Championship Show presented by John Deere, and the NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman. Going into the final leg of competition of the National Reined Cow Horse Association Circle Y Ranch Derby, Shawn Hays felt some trepidation. He had just seen Lyn Anderson and Tuckers Smart Cat take over the Open division lead with an impressive 152 in the cow work for a 444 composite. “I didn’t know if we could be the 150 that we needed to win, just because it’s so hard to get cattle that mark that high,” he said of the score he’d need to mark on CGS Starscommand to win the title. “But we drew a good cow down the fence, and he’s always good there.” Hays and the 5-year-old cow horse marked a 151. That resulted in two championships – the Open and Intermediate Open! The two wins [...]

The first-ever American Quarter Horse Association Ranching Heritage Challenge will be held January 13, 2012, as part of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo in Fort Worth, Texas. The inaugural show will be held as an entry-fee event and will include $10,000 in added money. Open-level exhibitors and non-pros will be able to test their ranch-bred horses against other ranch-bred horses in a class that will show off their reining, roping and cow-handling abilities. “The Ranching Heritage Challenge is part of AQHA’s push to recognize the solid ranch horses the breed was built on,” said Jim Bret Campbell, AQHA senior director of marketing and publications. “Horses bred by AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders will be eligible for the contest, whether the owner is a rancher or not. Going forward, eligible ranches will nominate foals to the Ranching Heritage Challenge program, but for the first event in Fort Worth, competitors will only pay an entry fee. We’re excited to partner with Fort Worth on this great addition to their Heritage Weekend. I can’t think of a better place to kick off the Challenge events.” The 2012 event will not require nominations and will be open to all horses that were bred [...]
