Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society (BEHS), an organization that helps starving and abused horses across Texas, will hold the Bluebonnet Adopt-a-Thon on May 14th, 2011 at the Bar Cross Cowboy Church in Alvarado, Texas. The event will run from 10am until 4pm and the organization hopes to have 20-30 adoptable horses on hand to meet the public. Randi Smith, Adoption Coordinator for BEHS, says, “We hope to find many adopters and showcase the talents of our rescue horses. I want to show the public that rescue horses can do anything any horse can do.” Attending horses will range in age from young foals to older horses. Some will be broke to ride while others still need training. Horses of different breeds and talents will be present at the adopt-a-thon. In addition to the adoptable horses, there will be trainers giving training and behavior clinics throughout the day, a silent auction featuring horse and ranch themed art, clothing, crafts and jewelry, and a sale area that will include new and used horse tack and equipment. Proceeds from the silent auction and sale area will benefit the horses of Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society. “We want to make this a fun-filled horse day for [...]

Standing-room only crowd fills John Justin Arena to see Mustangs in action. The overflowing crowd packed the John Justin Arena on January 22 to see the finals to Mustang Magic, and the Mustangs and trainers did not disappoint. The crowd was moved to a standing ovation on numerous occasions during the exciting freestyle finals of Mustang Magic, which was presented by the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo and Sam’s Club. Teryn Muench of Marietta, Oklahoma, and Maverick, the Mustang he has trained since September, won the top prize with a performance that wowed the judges and the crowd with flying lead changes and by roping a calf. Nineteen trainers and Mustangs competed in the event and vied for their share of the $10,000 purse. Muench received a check for $3,500 for the victory and Maverick, a 6-year-old red roan gelding gathered from the Black Rock Range East in Nevada, received a new home. Maverick was adopted by Tony Riley of Texas for $2,600. With just more than 100 days to not only gentle but also teach the Mustangs basic riding maneuvers, the trainers once again displayed their incredible horsemanship skills. Mustang Magic is an invitational event for Mustang trainers [...]

The Lusitano breed was in the spotlight at the recent United States Dressage Federation (USDF) Annual Convention in Jacksonville, Florida, when an award-winning Lusitano took part in the symposium and two lucky audience members won tickets to the upcoming 2011 Lusitano CollectionTM International Horse Auction. The auction, which will be held at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center in Wellington, Florida, on February 23-26, 2011, will feature Lusitano horses from the world’s top Lusitano breeders. Dressage rider Leah Winston showed the six-year-old Lusitano stallion Amintas Interagro, owned by Al and Sherie Zobec of Z Stallions in Palm City, Florida, in the USDF symposium. Winston has found success with Amintas in the FEI Six-Year-Old division and believes the stallion has Grand Prix potential. “Amintas is my pride and joy,” Winston said, adding that she co-owns him with the Zobecs. “Although the level we were demonstrating was below the level he is currently competing, it was great exposure for us and the Lusitano breed. The judges for the symposium, Gary Rockwell and Lilo Fiore, treated us very fairly and helped me with some of the issues that actually carry through to the level I ride Amintas in now. Gary even commented that he is a very [...]

Madeleine LeClerc of Boyd, Texas, and Eye Brow Cat captivated the audience with a bridleless routine and won the Legends title at the Extreme Mustang Makeover in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, October 23. The Eastern Extreme Mustang Makeover featured Legends and Idols divisions for adults and a yearling division for youth. LeClerc and Eye Brow Cat received a total of 114 points from the judges out of a possible 120. LeClerc earned $3,000 for the victory and a custom Gist Silversmith belt buckle. Eye Brow Cat is a 3-year-old bay gelding from Wyoming. LeClerc’s fiancé Robert Carlson and his Mustang RockNRolla finished second with a score of 112.5. Virtually untouched by humans just 90 days ago, the Mustangs competing in the Extreme Mustang Makeover were picked up from Bureau of Land Management facilities in Piney Woods, Mississippi, or Pauls Valley, Oklahoma in July. Eye Brow Cat’s nickname became “Wildcat” when he showed his wild side in the chute when LeClerc was loading him in the trailer to go home for the first time. “I didn’t have more than tolerance from him for the first nine weeks,” LeClerc said. “There was so little trust that it was difficult at first.
