Sadly, NRHA and reining lost one of their most beloved legends when Bill Horn succumbed to illness on Dec. 9, 2011, at the age of 73. The void his passing leaves behind cannot be filled. His friends and fans will remember him as the ultimate reiner. He was a student of Dale Wilkinson and he learned the trade well. He was a mentor to many, an NRHA President, an NRHA Hall of Fame inductee, NRHA’s first Million Dollar Rider, multiple NRHA Futurity, Derby, SuperStakes, and World Champion. But most of all he was a friend, known to an entire family of reiners as BH. A “Celebration of Life” for Bill Horn” took place Saturday, December 17, at their Florida home.

The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Board of Directors voted to approve an Animal Welfare and Medications rule, including a multi-phase testing and research policy. Due to the overwhelming response from the NRHA membership throughout a series of Town Talks, the Board agreed this course of action is in the best interest of the reining horse and the organization as a whole. The information gathered in the multi-phase research process will provide a solid foundation for the future. “We had many discussions with the membership and received a tremendous amount of feedback. I believe this rule change and phase-in research program will meet the needs of a wide and diverse membership base. We addressed many domestic and internationals concerns and found a workable solution,” commented NRHA Vice-President Beth Himes. NRHA President Allen Mitchels stated, “Making this decision is a big step forward in protecting the welfare of our horses. This process gives us a great opportunity to collect data specific to our sport and implement a program that is suitable for our industry. This policy, along with our Stewards Program, demonstrates our commitment to the well-being of our equine athletes.” Incorporated in 1966, the National Reining Horse Association is the [...]

The newest trend in Reining is the addition of aged classes for horses age seven and older. This year the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) is excited to offer its own 7 & Up class at the NRHA Derby, held June 27 – July 2 in Oklahoma City.
After the checks were cut for the 2011 National Reining Breeders Classic, another reining sire entered the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) record books. Unofficially, Conquistador Whiz became NRHA’s newest Million Dollar Sire thanks to the performance of his offspring at the Katy, Texas show. The sixteen-year-old stallion is the 20th horse to make this milestone achievement. Conquistador Whiz, bred by Bob Loomis, came from the successful pairing of Loomis’ NRHA Seven Million Dollar Sire Topsail Whiz and the Bueno Chex mare Sugarita Chex. This match produced the first-ever third generation NRHA Million Dollar Sire. Conquistador Whiz’s grandsire Topsail Cody became an NRHA Million Dollar Sire in 1998. His sire Topsail Whiz joined the ranks in 2001. Conquistador Whiz earned more than $100,000 in the NRHA show arena and was the 2000 NRHA Open Derby Champion, 2000 National Reining Breeders Classic Open Derby Champion, 2002 USET Festival of Champions USEF Reining Champion and 2002 World Equestrian Games Gold Medal Team member and Individual Silver Medalist. NRHA Corporate Partner Silver Spurs Equine purchased the sire from George Shifrin who owned the horse for a majority of his show career. He currently stands at Silver Spurs Equine in Cave Creek, Arizona. Conquistador [...]

The United States Equestrian Team (USET) Foundation Board of Trustees hosted a cocktail reception on Friday, January 28, 2011, to honor the equestrian athletes that represented the United States during the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG), the recipients of the Foundations’ Gold Medal Club Anniversary Awards, the Lionel Guerrand-Hermes Trophy, and the Whitney Stone Cup. The reception was held at Player’s Club in Wellington, FL. The United States earned a Team and Individual Gold Medal and an Individual Silver Medal in Reining, a Team Gold Medal in Vaulting, a Team Silver and Individual Bronze Medal in Driving, and two Individual Bronze Medals in Dressage.
By Joanie Morris, USEF In a year that equestrian sport was forever changed in the United States, an all-American horseman was honored for his golden achievement. For the second consecutive year, the voters for USEF Horse and Equestrian of the Year have crowned a horse and his rider as champions in both categories. Tom McCutcheon, the only American double Gold medalist at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games had barely finished celebrating the achievements of Gunners Special Nite as 2010 Farnam/Platform USEF Horse of the Year on Friday evening at the USEF Annual Meeting, when he would find himself on stage again, this time picking up an honor all his own. McCutcheon wrote his place in history, becoming the first reiner to be crowned USEF Equestrian of the Year. For McCutcheon, this honor isn’t about one day or one horse show, it is about the daily pursuit of excellence. A culmination of a lifetime of work paid off in the Alltech Arena during the first week of the WEG. After a year of disappointing results, McCutcheon knew it would take a really special horse to turn his luck around. He found some inspiration in wife Mandy McCutcheon, found the horse [...]

By Joanie Morris, USEF The city of Lexington was largely defined by the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in 2010, so it proved a fitting setting to crown the 2010 Farnam/Platform USEF Horse of the Year. And the winner couldn’t be more all-American. The only multiple Gold medal-winning horse for Team USA, Gunners Special Nite, a six-year-old American Quarter Horse brought the sport of Reining to the forefront of the American equestrian community. People who had never heard of reining watched Gunners Special Nite put in a foot-perfect effort to cruise to victory with the Adequan U.S. Reining Team on NBC’s Broadcast. The team won a Team Gold medal by the largest margin in history. But it was the Individual Championship where Gunners Special Nite stood out above the rest of the field. His performance with steely veteran Tom McCutcheon brought down the house in the Alltech Arena and secured Gunners Special Nite’s place in the history books. Sarah B. Willeman of Turnabout Farm bought Gunners Special Nite just before the Adequan/USEF Selection Trials for the Adequan U.S. Reining Team which were held in July. McCutcheon had a big task at hand in his first competition, but the chestnut stallion [...]

Since 2007, the National Reining Horse Youth Association (NRHyA) has offered youth reiners an online program that rewards members for their leadership and community service activities outside of the show arena. The Varsity Reining Club (VRC) was established to engage youth members and encourage them to become active at both the local and national level. This program offers NRHyA members opportunities to contribute to their association and develop valuable life skills. Going into the fifth year of this program, VRC will continue to prepare NRHyA members to be successful, contributing members of society. Youth members are awarded points by doing any combination of projects listed at www.nrhya.com. Each youth can submit activity reports in a variety of subject areas they find fun and interesting such as arts and crafts, photography or can be awarded for their volunteer work in their community or for helping out at shows. Other subject areas encompass creative writing, fundraising or leadership activities, including holding or attending NRHyA meetings. In 2010, VRC offered more scholarship money than ever before to reward members for work in their communities as they fought for VRC’s most prestigious award, “Youths of the Year,” which recognizes the youth earning the most [...]
