Due to recent events surrounding an EHV1 Outbreak in horses across the country, the San Angelo SHOT Clinic and Show originally scheduled for May 20-21 will be re-scheduled for August 5th and 6th. Though EHV cases have not yet been identified in Texas, the extent of this outbreak is still unfolding. Major NCHA and AQHA events have been cancelled and several large Texas ranches and boarding facilities have prohibited the movement of horses in and out of their facilities. Because we do not know the full extent of this disease in our state, SHOT feels it is in the best interest of our members and their horses that this event be rescheduled. Below is a briefing from the NCHA about the current outbreak and links to more information about this deadly disease. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes our members, but the health of your horses and horses across Texas is our first priority. EHV-1 UPDATE: Tuesday May 17, 9:00 a.m. (Central Time) The NCHA continues to closely monitor the situation of reported cases of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) that were reportedly first clinically diagnosed in horses that attended the NCHA Western National Championships in Ogden, Utah conducted April 29 [...]

The American Stock Horse Association (ASHA) would like to invite you to attend the 3rd Annual American Stock Horse Association National Collegiate Championship Show to be held April 15 – 16, 2011 at the Taylor County Exposition Center in Abilene, Texas. This national event is open to all collegiate riders and horses regardless of breed or registration. One of ASHA’s fastest growing programs, the Collegiate Program has had an undeniable impact on those students who take the challenge to “ride a better horse”. Active collegiate programs are established in Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming with students from many of these schools making the trip to compete. The 2010 show hosted 11 schools with Texas Tech University winning the championship. Will Texas A & M University step up to the top spot at this year’s event? Or, will one of the other Texas schools like Tarleton State University, Sam Houston State University, Stephen F Austin State University or Clarendon College take the title? These teams will have to stay ahead of the strong out of state squads from New Mexico University and Wyoming’s Laramie County Community College. “The camaraderie is my favorite part of [...]

The Stock Horse of Texas is bringing their program to “help you ride a better horse” to San Angelo’s Spur Arena on August 6-7, 2010. The weekend of fun kicks off on Friday morning with a SHOT clinic, starting at 9 a.m. The clinic will focus on all four classes of SHOT, including reining, cow horse, trail and pleasure. Friday evening is SHOT Family Night, with a hot dog supper and a stick horse trail contest at 6 p.m. Later that evening, SHOT is hosting a herd work competition at 7 p.m. This class is judged on the ability of the horse to work a cow by separating it from the herd, driving it to the middle and holding the cow. During the herd work, horses will not be penalized for reining, but should display their natural ability. The herd work competition is open to any contestant who is entered in the SHOT show on Saturday. Saturday’s SHOT show begins at 8 a.m. and will feature the six SHOT divisions, Open, Non Pro, Limited Non Pro, Novice, Youth and Green Horse. For entry information, visit stockhorsetexas.org. Several other SHOT clinics and shows are scheduled for 2010. For more information on [...]

ASHA/SHOT to hold show concurrently with AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse competition The American Stock Horse Association (ASHA) and Stock Horse of Texas (SHOT) are excited to announce a partnership with AQHA to concurrently run an ASHA/SHOT approved show in conjunction with an AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse class during the Texas Classic in Fort Worth, Texas, May 29-31, 2010. “This is an unprecedented opportunity for exhibitors to earn AQHA points on their horses while simultaneously earning ASHA and SHOT points,” said Kim Lindsey, Executive Director of SHOT. “We are excited we were able to combine the events so that our exhibitors have the chance to earn points in all three associations at one show.” To be eligible to show in the combined ASHA/SHOT and AQHA class, exhibitors must show in either the Non Pro or Open division of ASHA/SHOT and meet membership/eligibility requirements of all three associations. The show will follow a regular ASHA/SHOT schedule, with AQHA exhibitors adding ranch cutting and ranch conformation to their list of classes. Exhibitors in Ranch Pleasure, Ranch Trail, Reining and Working Cow Horse/AQHA Working Ranch Horse will have one run in each class that will be simultaneously scored according to ASHA/SHOT rules for that [...]

The American Ranch Horse Association has announced Jennifer Strange of Daleville, Ind., and Phantom Yankee and Austin Meador of Florissant, Mo., and Te Topsy Turvee as winners of the ARHA Amateur and Youth Rookie of the Year awards, respectively. The Rookie of the Year title is awarded to the first-year ARHA Amateur and Youth members who have no prior breed association points and who have the most ARHA points accumulated on one horse in 2009. Jennifer Strange and Phantom Yankee: 2009 ARHA Amateur Rookie of the Year Strange has owned Phantom Yankee (“Boo”) since October 2008. Having purchased Boo with the intent of showing in reining competitions, she was introduced to ARHA by trainer Bill Black and began showing in just about every event except cutting. “The ARHA is a wonderful association that lets people just show their horses,” Strange said. “The people are friendly, and everyone helps everyone out.” A therapy supervisor by occupation, Strange said she hadn’t started the 2009 show season with Rookie of the Year intentions, but after the ARHA World Show in June, she realized the title was in sight and continued working for it. She and Boo are also 2009 ARHA High Point Amateur [...]

Kammi Kern Norton of Bloomfield, Ind., and THF Hollywood Chrome have earned the 2009 American Ranch Horse Association Ranch Horse Versatility Champion title, and Wendy Bink of Argyle, N.Y., and Dustys Jackinthebox took home the Ranch Horse Versatility Reserve Champion title. Lia Savas, of Huntington, N.Y., and Yo Quiero Cat came in third place overall. A program formed in 2009, the ARHA Ranch Horse Versatility competition comprises five events-ranch riding, ranch trail, ranch cutting, working ranch horse and ranch conformation-that are hosted at shows throughout the year. Kammi Kern Norton and THF Hollywood Chrome: Ranch Horse Versatility Champion Norton purchased “Woody,” now a 7-year-old Palomino gelding, as a 3-year-old. She showed him in the trail, ranch riding and confirmation portions of the Versatility competitions, and her trainer, Ben Bowman of Sanborn, Ind., rode him in the ranch cutting and working ranch horse classes. Of the classes, Norton says ranch riding is Woody’s strongest because he’s very correct and consistent. “Even though we were both learning at the same time, he was the best horse for me to start reining and cow work. He is not one of those horses that requires a lot of training or riding to get ready [...]

Lindsey Conti of Wentzville, Mo., and her horse, Rose Deelivery, and Jennifer Strange of Daleville, Ind., and her horse, Phantom Yankee, have been named High Point Award winners for the 2009 American Ranch Horse Association competition year. Lindsey Conti and Rose Deelivery: Open and Youth High Point Award Conti and “Rosey” took home the honor in two divisions, Open and Youth. Now an 8-year-old Paint mare, Conti first rode and “fell in love with Rosey” at a cattle round up in Iowa and purchased her in November 2007. “I committed to work hard with Rosey so that the two of us could excel in every event we entered,” Conti said, and the work paid off. In 2008, they were ARHA Reserve High Point Youth Award winners. In 2009, the pair traveled more than 15,000 miles to shows in Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Georgia. “One thing that I love about showing in the American Ranch Horse Association and that I love about Rosey is that I can show in everything! In addition to 50 percent of the Versatility entry fees awarded at local competitions, in 2010, each show’s Versatility winner will receive a custom-made Skyline Vaquero buckle. A minimum of five Versatility Program entries at the show are necessary for the buckle to be awarded. The next show to offer the buckle is the Volunteer Ranch Horse Association show, February 6 and 7 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Find additional shows online at www.americanranchhorse.net/eventscalendar.htm.
