AQHA’s convention in March is also a place to learn about what’s going on at your Association, as well as in the industry. Each spring, AQHA conducts a convention to review AQHA rules and policies. In addition to standing-committee and board of director meetings, AQHA also puts together an educational forum for its members. This year’s forum is the afternoon of Friday, March 9, at the South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Designed to inform a cross-section of the industry on what is going on within AQHA, this year’s forum will focus on show leveling; the Association’s new wide-ranging youth initiative; a review and update on industry registration, transfer and breeding statistics and forecasts; and a Washington, D.C., update on legislative issues in crucial election year. In late July 2011, the AQHA Executive Committee approved the AQHA competition leveling plan, which was developed and recommended by the AQHA Blue-Ribbon Task Force that has met numerous times since September 2010 to address AQHA’s show structure. Full implementation of the plan will take place in 2013. AQHA Executive Director of Shows Patti Carter-Pratt will explain the leveling program concept; describe the different levels, including new Rookie and Intermediate levels; and [...]

His friends and fans will remember him as the ultimate reiner. He was a student of Dale Wilkinson and he learned the trade well. He was a mentor to many, an NRHA President, an NRHA Hall of Fame inductee, NRHA’s first Million Dollar Rider, multiple NRHA Futurity, Derby, SuperStakes, and World Champion. But most of all he was a friend, known to an entire family of reiners as BH.
Incentive fund stallion enrollment deadline is extended to January 16. When the AQHA Incentive Fund began back in the early 1980s, it was the most innovative show-based incentive program to hit the industry, and it immediately made offspring of stallions nominated to the Incentive Fund worth more money because when the foals were enrolled, the owners of those foals got paid for AQHA eligible points they earned. AQHA is proud of the Incentive Fund and the value it has brought to the industry for nearly 30 years. Some changes needed to be made in order to reward stallion owners and to keep the program viable for another 30 years and beyond. AQHA is extending the deadline to enroll stallions to January 16, 2012 with no penalties. AQHA wants to make sure that all stallion owners understand the changes being made and give assurance that these changes were made with special consideration given to stallion owners who, since the program’s inception, have been the chief supporters of the Incentive Fund. 1. Stallion owners will get a bigger percentage back. Previously, stallion owners received 10 percent of the pool of money each year. Now that percentage has increased to 15 percent, and [...]

In late July, the American Quarter Horse Association Executive Committee approved the AQHA competition leveling plan, which was developed and recommended by the AQHA Blue-Ribbon Task Force. Full implementation of the plan will take place in 2013. Leveling program changes include more and different divisions, including new Rookie and Intermediate showing levels; more and different awards; and two novice championship shows. Leveling involves these new divisions: • Rookie (based on the exhibitor and horse’s experience/points combined) • Novice (based on the exhibitor’s experience) • Green (based on the horse’s experience) • Intermediate (based on the exhibitor’s experience) • Progressive (based on the horse’s experience) • Open This year, AQHA tested Rookie classes at 10 AQHA-approved shows to much success. In 2012, the Rookie horse and exhibitor level will officially be implemented, and Rookie classes within shows will be another option for show committees to consider when planning their 2012 schedules. Rookie classes can be offered in open, amateur and youth. Two other new levels are based just on the rider or just on the horse. The Intermediate level will be tabulated on exhibitor points, while the Progressive level will be based on a horse’s points. These levels will be implemented in 2013. [...]

AQHA-Pfizer Best Remuda Award America’s Horse November 4, 2011 – In honor of its good ranch horses, Tongue River Ranch of Dumont, Texas, will accept the AQHA-Pfizer Best Remuda Award November 12 during the World Championship Ranch Rodeo in Amarillo. The award began in 1992 and recognizes outstanding ranches for their efforts in raising American Quarter Horses, an important tool of their trade. Any ranch that has five or more American Quarter Horse mares used to produce horses for ranch work and is a member of AQHA is eligible for this award. It’s fitting that Tongue River Ranch will receive the Best Remuda Award during the championship ranch rodeo, since that’s a rodeo the ranch has qualified for nine times, more than any other ranch. Twice, Tongue River has been honored with having the top horse at the championship rodeo. Those good horses that perform in the ranch rodeo arena also work hard on the 89,000 acres of ranch land that includes portions of four Texas counties: King, Cottle, Motley and Dickens. Tongue River Ranch was founded in 1898 by the Swenson family. It was purchased by Millard Morris of DeRidder, Louisiana, in 1997, and one of his first moves [...]

Each year, AQHA honors breeders who have dedicated their livelihoods to maintaining the integrity of the American Quarter Horse. These horsemen and families see their biggest accomplishments and proudest moments in the horses they breed. This year, the honorees included 14 who received the cumulative award and 12 who received the legacy award. Cumulative breeders are those who have registered at least one foal for 50 years cumulatively. Legacy breeders are those who have registered at least one foal for 50 consecutive years. Honorees ranged from people who have bred American Quarter Horses for cutting, ranch and rodeo use to breeders of racehorses. Recipients were also geographically dispersed, hailing from Alabama, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and Canada. All have dedicated 50 years or more to taking their best and making it better. “It’s our honor to recognize the effort and time these breeders have spent in pushing the development of the [...]

Contributed Courtesy of The American Quarter Horse Journal To help ease AQHA Select exhibitors’ minds and proactively help professionals and exhibitors make educated decisions, the AQHA Executive Committee today opted to lower qualifying points for the Adequan Select World Championship Show. The decision to lower the points was a result of the timing of the May 31 qualifying deadline for the Adequan Select and the recently reported cases of equine herpesvirus-1 myeloencephalopathy in the western United States. The Adequan Select is August 28 – September 3 in Amarillo. Since first learning of the recent cases of EHV-1, AQHA has received numerous phone calls from trainers, exhibitors and show managers primarily from states that have confirmed cases of EHV-1 or border states that have confirmed cases. Several show managers have either voluntarily canceled or are considering cancellation of their shows this weekend, and some exhibitors have expressed their reluctance to move their horses out of concern of potentially exposing them to EHV-1. “We believe it’s reasonable and responsive to our Select exhibitors struggling with the decision to try to gather a final half point or point and qualify for the Adequan Select to do the conscientious thing,” said AQHA President Peter [...]
