APHA shows some love with new flat fees, reduced late fees and introductory classes at lower rates for the 2012 AjPHA Youth World Show. Changes add spark to a full slate of World Championship classes and fun activities. In preparation for the upcoming 2012 American Junior Paint Horse Association’s (AjPHA) Youth World Championship Show, to be held June 22-30, 2012, at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, the organization put into action suggestions made over the past several years to make the Youth World Show more exhibitor-friendly, more pocketbook-friendly, and more fun. Reduced fees will make parents happy. A new “flat fee” for youth entering multiple classes provides $100 savings on six World Championship classes or six Introductory classes. Reduced late fees mean $50 savings per class on late entries, and $37.50 savings per class for those added to a pre-entry. Introductory “World Show Champion” and “Fun” classes will make kids happy. The six introductory-type World Show Champion classes are open to youth who have never earned a world or reserve world championship in APHA competition, and who ride Regular Registry Paint Horses. They are: Disciplined Rail English, Disciplined Rail Western, Ideal Paint English, Ideal Paint Western, [...]

His friends and fans will remember him as the ultimate reiner. He was a student of Dale Wilkinson and he learned the trade well. He was a mentor to many, an NRHA President, an NRHA Hall of Fame inductee, NRHA’s first Million Dollar Rider, multiple NRHA Futurity, Derby, SuperStakes, and World Champion. But most of all he was a friend, known to an entire family of reiners as BH.
The Pinto World Championship will not be postponed because of the recent threat of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV). All the necessary precautions are underway to proactively ensure EHV does not affect the Pinto World Championship, June 7 – 18, 2011. Competitors should not be concerned about the safety of their horses during the show. In efforts to guarantee no virus influence the Built Ford Tough Livestock Complex at Expo Square, staff has been working tirelessly to clean and disinfect the facilities. The Pinto Horse Association of America is certain the facility will be satisfactory for exhibitors. “The care and safety of Pinto Horse Association members and their horses is of great importance to the Pinto Horse Association, and protecting members at the Pinto World Championship against EHV is our top priority,” Executive Vice President Darrell Bilke said. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, EHV can be a serious disease of horses that can cause abortion and death. Clinical signs include high fever, neurological symptoms and nasal discharge. The virus can spread through the air, contaminated equipment, clothing and hands. The 2011 Breeder’s Invitational was cancelled due to concern of EHV. Because of the fast work of everyone involved, no [...]

Mr Bay Jewel, a 6-year-old solid Paint-bred gelding, helped a trainer and celebrity team win the 2011 Reining with the Stars competition on April 17. Sired by Marthas Mega Jac (AQHA) and out of Bootspainted Jewel, the gelding, also known as “Barney,” was bred by top reining competitor Scott McCutcheon of Whitesboro, Texas, and is owned by G.C. Powell of Smithville, Mo. He has an impressive reining record, including winning a Reserve World Championship in Solid Paint-Bred Reining at the 2009 APHA World Show. In the competition, held in Madison, Wis., trainer Cal Middleton coached Barney’s rider Ernie Rodina, a Purina Mills sales manager and Better Horses Radio host, to the win. Middleton selected the Paint Horse because of their past successes as a team in National Reining Horse Association events. Rodina was able to ride the horse only a couple of times before entering the ring for the competition. For the event, he had to perform a reining pattern aboard Barney, and then Middleton had to ride the same horse in a trainer freestyle pattern. “He definitely had less time on his horse than any other celebrity in the event,” Middleton commented about his celebrity rider Ernie Rodina. “Our [...]

Communication via the social media has reached new heights at the American Paint Horse Association (APHA). Since the debut of the APHA Facebook webpage in April 2009, the association has been utilizing this tool to provide an innovative avenue for members and Paint Horse enthusiasts to connect and interact. Support of the APHA page has continued to grow, and today APHA announced reaching an impressive milestone on Friday, April 8, by accumulating its 40,000th Facebook fan. In early April APHA began a campaign to build anticipation for the event by announcing that the 40,000th person to become a fan of the page would receive a special prize. It only took a few days before the goal was not only met, but exceeded. Justin Buschbacher, a longtime APHA member from Wentzville, Mo., was the big winner. “I have realized Facebook is the easiest way to see what is going on in the world today, and APHA’s Facebook page is no exception,” said Justin when asked what prompted him to become a fan of the page. “I am looking at attending this year’s APHA World Show in the fall if my military duties allow me to do so, and I know I [...]

Rider named USEF Equestrian of the Year On Saturday, January 22, in Lexington, Ky., the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) announced the winner of their Horse of the Year award-the organization’s highest honor. The award was given to American Paint Horse Colonels Nite Special, the only multiple gold medal-winning horse for Team USA at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian GamesT, held September 25 through October 10 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. This 6-year-old reining superstar helped Team USA win the team gold medal by the largest margin in history, then returned to win the individual gold medal. The other four horses in contention for the Horse of the Year award were the elite of their breeds, dominating their disciplines as well. Colonels Nite Special (registered AQHA as Gunners Special Nite) is owned by Sarah Willeman of Turnabout Farm in Gloucester, Ma., and was ridden by Tom McCutcheon of Aubrey, Texas. Willeman purchased the horse shortly before the July 2010 selection trials for the World Equestrian Games. The young stallion was ridden by McCutcheon in the selection trials in July 2010 and was named the Reserve USEF National Champion and runner-up in the trials. “I never imagined I [...]

By Joanie Morris, USEF In a year that equestrian sport was forever changed in the United States, an all-American horseman was honored for his golden achievement. For the second consecutive year, the voters for USEF Horse and Equestrian of the Year have crowned a horse and his rider as champions in both categories. Tom McCutcheon, the only American double Gold medalist at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games had barely finished celebrating the achievements of Gunners Special Nite as 2010 Farnam/Platform USEF Horse of the Year on Friday evening at the USEF Annual Meeting, when he would find himself on stage again, this time picking up an honor all his own. McCutcheon wrote his place in history, becoming the first reiner to be crowned USEF Equestrian of the Year. For McCutcheon, this honor isn’t about one day or one horse show, it is about the daily pursuit of excellence. A culmination of a lifetime of work paid off in the Alltech Arena during the first week of the WEG. After a year of disappointing results, McCutcheon knew it would take a really special horse to turn his luck around. He found some inspiration in wife Mandy McCutcheon, found the horse [...]
