APHA shows some love with new flat fees, reduced late fees and introductory classes at lower rates for the 2012 AjPHA Youth World Show. Changes add spark to a full slate of World Championship classes and fun activities. In preparation for the upcoming 2012 American Junior Paint Horse Association’s (AjPHA) Youth World Championship Show, to be held June 22-30, 2012, at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, the organization put into action suggestions made over the past several years to make the Youth World Show more exhibitor-friendly, more pocketbook-friendly, and more fun. Reduced fees will make parents happy. A new “flat fee” for youth entering multiple classes provides $100 savings on six World Championship classes or six Introductory classes. Reduced late fees mean $50 savings per class on late entries, and $37.50 savings per class for those added to a pre-entry. Introductory “World Show Champion” and “Fun” classes will make kids happy. The six introductory-type World Show Champion classes are open to youth who have never earned a world or reserve world championship in APHA competition, and who ride Regular Registry Paint Horses. They are: Disciplined Rail English, Disciplined Rail Western, Ideal Paint English, Ideal Paint Western, [...]

Haley Harrington of Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. was named Arabian Horse Association 2011 Youth of the Year. An outstanding individual with an incredible record of success at just 18, Harrington made her way into the hearts of the Youth of the Year Committee with her ardent involvement with Arabian horses and her unwavering commitment to her school and community. Harrington has been front and center as a leader for the Arabian Horse Youth Association (AHYA) where she served as Vice President in 2011. While Harrington seems to have a quite demeanor, she is hardly a silent leader and worked diligently to get sport horse under saddle classes added to the Youth Nationals class list in 2011. Harrington’s idea proved to be a good one as the first-ever purebred sport horse under saddle class had enough entries to require elimination rounds. Harrington’s success in the show ring reflects her love for the hunter and sport horse divisions where she earned two unanimous Championships, one Reserve Championship and three Top Ten’s at the 2011 Youth Nationals in sport horse under saddle, hunter hack, hunter seat equitation and working hunter classes. At the regional level in 2011 Harrington cleaned up with six Championships, [...]

AQHA’s convention in March is also a place to learn about what’s going on at your Association, as well as in the industry. Each spring, AQHA conducts a convention to review AQHA rules and policies. In addition to standing-committee and board of director meetings, AQHA also puts together an educational forum for its members. This year’s forum is the afternoon of Friday, March 9, at the South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Designed to inform a cross-section of the industry on what is going on within AQHA, this year’s forum will focus on show leveling; the Association’s new wide-ranging youth initiative; a review and update on industry registration, transfer and breeding statistics and forecasts; and a Washington, D.C., update on legislative issues in crucial election year. In late July 2011, the AQHA Executive Committee approved the AQHA competition leveling plan, which was developed and recommended by the AQHA Blue-Ribbon Task Force that has met numerous times since September 2010 to address AQHA’s show structure. Full implementation of the plan will take place in 2013. AQHA Executive Director of Shows Patti Carter-Pratt will explain the leveling program concept; describe the different levels, including new Rookie and Intermediate levels; and [...]

The United States Pony Clubs has announced that the sport of Polo will be officially recognized as a Pony Club discipline during the 2012 USPC Annual Meeting and Equine Symposium next week in New Orleans. The U.S. Polo Association (USPA), polo’s national governing body, has been a resource activity for Pony Club since 1980. Polo has built a strong foundation to support the new collaboration and its long-term objective to develop horsemanship interest in youth. The joint venture between USPA and Pony Club has been years in the making and the Lexington-based entities will work closely together in a cross-promotional effort to attract young riders to both organizations. Pony Club and The USPA are excited about this unique collaboration and the opportunities it presents for young equine enthusiasts to play polo and take advantage of everything America’s first team sport has to offer. “We have a solid infrastructure in place and feel polo can offer an overall great experience for the U.S. Pony Club and its members to help develop their horsemanship skills,” said USPA Executive Director Peter Rizzo. “We are grateful to the U.S. Pony Club for helping us make polo more accessible to young riders everywhere as our [...]
