KWPN-NA Stallion Auction is Underway For sport horse breeders seeking to donate to a good cause and breed to a top stallion, the KWPN-NA stallion service auction is the perfect opportunity to do both. Now through February 17, online bidding is welcome for 17 stallions that feature some of the best jumping and dressage bloodlines. The auction benefits the KWPN-NA’s mission to offer educational programs and resources for breeders and aspiring breeders. “The auction raises funds that go toward KWPN-NA awards programs,” says Willy Arts, the KWPN-NA Chairman. “It has been very successful over the years, and we have breeders that look forward to it each February.” This year’s roster of stallions includes horses with bloodlines that are recognized worldwide for athletic ability, and the propensity to produce quality offspring. These bloodlines have produced hundreds of premium offspring that have competed through the highest levels of the sport. One breeding per stallion has been donated by the stallion owner and agents to: Farrington keur; Jonker; Laroche; Lupicor; Navarone; Negro; Popyeye K; UB40; Banderas; Figaro B; Kinnaras; Novalis; Richard; Rubinus; Schroeder; Toronto and Valentino Z. Arts continues, “These are some of the most popular stallions in North America. We are very [...]

the year, the United States Equestrian Team Foundation works diligently to honor the top riders in their disciplines as they excel at the highest level of the sport. In 2010, the USET Foundation presented 16 awards to riders in five disciplines to honor their incredible achievements. The mission of the USET Foundation is to support and foster America’s riders and they help do this by recognizing each athlete’s excellent accomplishments. This year during their fundraising event, the USET Foundation recognized the Whitney Stone Cup recipient McLain Ward. The award is given to an active competitor whose consistent excellence in international competition, and whose standards of sportsmanlike conduct and contributions as an ambassador for the sport and for the USET, exemplify the Team’s highest ideals and traditions. In 2009, Ward was unstoppable as he consistently exhibited brilliance in international competition. The Lionel Guerrand-Hermes Trophy was also presented in February and this year the award went to young rider Jennifer Waxman. The award goes to a Young Rider in one of the Olympic disciplines who exemplifies both sportsmanship and horsemanship. In March, the Maxine Beard Show Jumping Developing Rider Award was presented to Nicholas Dello Joio at the 2010 American Invitational in [...]

GREENWOOD FARM FALL HORSE TRIALS IN WEATHERFORD Presented by Charlie Gilchrist’s SouthWest Ford This autumn’s Horse Trials, held on September 24-26, will feature the Chronicle of the Horse Central United States Adult Team Challenge. The Chronicle is a weekly magazine published in Middleburg, Virginia which covers all internationally recognized horse shows in the U.S. and abroad. Teams of four riders will compete for perpetual trophies permanently displayed at the Chronicle offices. Over 200 riders and horses will arrive in Weatherford for the Horse Trials. In this horse triathlon known as “Three Day Eventing” or simply “Horse Trials”, a winning score takes plenty of practice and dedication. Entry-level jumps start at an inviting two feet. As each horse and rider team gains experience, they progress to increasingly intricate dressage tests requiring higher levels of training. The stadium jumping courses get higher, faster, and more demanding. The cross-country jumping courses, the special portion of this equestrian sport, become longer, and require even more rapid daring. The highest level of Greenwood’s six horse trial courses is Intermediate and is almost two miles long. It consists of jumps averaging four feet high, up to seven feet wide and includes hefty banks, steep drops, and [...]

Jennifer Mosing, Maurice, Louisiana and Laura VanderVliet Eventing, Nottingham, Pennsylvania are pleased to announce that, effective August 1, 2010. VanderVliet’s eventing operations will be based at Mosing’s Sterling Silver Stables in Maurice. Mosing owns several top event horses, including Pawlow, an 11-year-old gelding competed by Will Faudree and short-listed for the U.S. squad for the World Equestrian Games this fall. She was one of the first patron and owner members of the Professional Riders Organization. With the establishment of Sterling Silver Stables, Mosing began pursuing the development of a world-class equestrian center in Louisiana. The completely renovated facility that resulted has set the stage for bringing a top professional into her operation. VanderVliet, who currently competes at the advanced level with the syndicated Mighty Mangaroo and Kathleen Overbaugh’s King Billy, has moved all her competition horses to Sterling Silver Stables and will pursue her competitive career from there. A former assistant trainer for Scott Hassler at Hilltop Farm and Phillip Dutton at True Prospect Farm, VanderVliet has operated her own eventing business since 1998.
Breeders devote their lives, energy and hopes to producing world-class sport horses that will compete at the top levels of dressage, eventing, jumping and driving. One of the best tools available to help breeders in their quest is the keuring, or inspection, of breeding stock. The 2010 KWPN of North America (Royal Dutch Warmblood Studbook) keurings will take place at 11 locations throughout North America and offer breeders the opportunity to have their bloodstock evaluated, as well as see the results of other breeding programs. The outcome of keurings can increase the value of horses and also provide excellent marketing opportunities. So how can you successfully prepare your horses to receive the best marks from the jury? Several top KWPN-NA breeders share their secrets for making the most of the keuring experience. “My favorite things about the keurings are seeing the other breeders’ foals and offspring produced by different stallion and mare combinations,” says Julie Ballard Haralson, owner of Haralson Farm in Newnan, Georgia. “You see a lot of pictures and videos on the Internet, but it is not the same as seeing them in real life. This helps me a lot with future breeding decisions.” Julie has produced numerous [...]
