The Non Pro ancillary class of the 2010 Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity, held at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum in Ardmore, Oklahoma, was decided in an exciting run-off between Jordan Donnelly and Smokems Whiz, and Carl Lambert and Stun Gun, who had both scored a 146.
But in the end, it was Donnelly and the 4-year-old Topsail Whiz mare, out of Peppys Smokem, who emerged victorious, collecting $876, a Bob’s Custom Saddle, and a C.R. Morrison bronze.
“The saddle and the trophy were the main reason I wanted to run it off,” noted Donnelly, of Texas. “I had even more fun showing the second time. I knew she could do it again. I had already put her up so we just brought her up, trotted her around a little bit and went on in. My only plan was to show a little harder than I did the first time.”
Donnelly’s mother Kim Ferguson purchased Smokems Whiz in April, and although Jordan’s had success with the mare in the show ring, Ferguson is likely to begin showing her. “My mom is probably going to show her later on because I have a 3-year-old that I really need to concentrate on,” she explained.
But Lambert didn’t leave the Hardy Murphy Coliseum empty handed – he and Stun Gun won the Reserve Championship in both the Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro, pocketing $1,210 and two pairs of spurs by Rod Tuescher. Stun Gun, owned by Carl’s wife Victoria Lambert, is by Colonels Smoking Gun out of Sugar Baby Whiz.
Winning the Intermediate Non Pro division was Kerry Newell and Hailstorm Jaci, by Shine Like Hail out of Cowboy Mysti Jac. Newell and the 7-year-old mare marked a 148.5, winning a Montana Silversmiths buckle and a C.R. Morrison trophy.
“I thought she was great today! She’s always been good and solid. She’s just a very talented, quiet, and nice mare.” He purchased Hailstorm Jaci three years ago.
Newell thanked David Zimmerman for all his help. “I have to give credit to David Zimmerman – we train with him and he’s helped us,” he said. “My wife Julie and I both ride with him.”
