The 41st annual Louisiana 4-H and FFA State Horse Show was held July 6-10, at Ike Hamilton Expo Center in West Monroe.

The LSU AgCenter coordinated the event, and afterwards, LSU AgCenter Associate Vice-Chancellor Dwight Landreneau said, “Our horse program is second to none. These young people impress me. They know about the horse industry in Louisiana.”

The event is not “just a horse show”; many skills tests and speaking events are incorporated into it. The show’s highest award is that of Premier Exhibitor, with that title awarded to exhibitors who display a true knowledge of the horse. Each contestant is tested on equine skills and knowledge through an exam, interview, and resume process. The Gerry Lane Foundation sponsors the Premier Exhibitor award, with the winner receiving a $1,000 savings bond, a Premier Exhibitor jacket, and a trophy buckle. Cole Guidry, of Lafayette Parish, was this year’s Premier Exhibitor.

Jason Picard, of Vermilion Parish and a graduate of the LSU Master Horseman program, was recognized as the Horse Leader of the Year.
