image0024Traverse City, MI – July 11, 2009 – Seventeen-year-old Catherine Pasmore of Charlottesville, VA, rode to victory in the $10,000 Show Jumping Hall of Fame (SJHOF) Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic with Callabonna Z today at the Horse Shows by the Bay Equestrian Festival. Held at the Flintfields Horse Park in Traverse City, MI, the month-long horse show series will run through August 2, featuring top competition from some of the best horses and riders in the country.

A field of 16 showed in this afternoon’s $10,000 SJHOF Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic, which was sponsored by Flintwoode Farms, LLC. The class showed over a track set by Canadian course designer Eve Frisque, and after the initial round of competition, six entries went clear to jump-off.

The jump-off course featured long gallops across the large Grand Prix Ring to start and finish the course and had a sharp rollback turn from fences three to four. Six horse and rider combinations jumped off, and of those six, Catherine Pasmore and Laura Pfeiffer each had two mounts. The two girls ended up taking the top four ribbons, but it was Pasmore and Callabonna Z, owned by Pasmore Stables, LLC, who raced to the victory with the fastest clear jump-off round in a time of 32.572 seconds.

Laura Pfeiffer of Temperance, MI, rode Thorstin to second place with a clear round in 33.730 seconds, and placed in third with Anberlin after a clear jump-off round in 34.635 seconds. Pasmore placed fourth with her second mount, Pacific Beach-H.C., after the pair completed the fastest four-fault jump-off round in 35.114 seconds. Pasmore and Pacific Beach-H.C were also awarded the reserve championship in the High Jr./AO Jumpers yesterday.

Catherine Pasmore has owned nine-year-old Callabonna Z for almost three years and the pair has recently started doing very well together. “When I first got her we thought she would be a nice Low Junior Jumper and she wasn’t going to do anything bigger than that, but she is just like ‘The Little Engine That Could,'” Pasmore laughed. “She keeps impressing us all everyday and she has really turned into an amazing horse.”

“She is a little quirky,” Pasmore admitted. “She has her forward moments, but you just have to not ride the numbers. You just ride the course as it comes along because you never really know what is going to happen, but she has really become a lot more rideable and she has been really good lately.”

Pasmore thought that today’s course was good and not too hard, but definitely technical enough. “Not too many went clean and it was a fast jump-off,” she stated. “Laura Pfeiffer was pretty fast with both of hers, so we were kind of racing each other.”

Pasmore explained that she walked the course with her trainer, Michelle Grubb, and came up with a plan for the jump-off. “We had walked the best numbers possible and then I actually added up the first line, which ended up helping me because I did a neater turn afterwards,” she noted. “Then I just made sure that I got all of the lines after that in the best numbers that I could and it paid off.”

“She has a really big stride, so the long gallops were good for her,” Pasmore added. “I just had to make sure that I slowed her up at the end.”

This is Pasmore’s first year coming to Horse Shows by the Bay, and she is very impressed with the show. “It is a really nice show. So far we have really enjoyed ourselves,” Pasmore smiled. “My Dad and my brother and I brought our jet skis too, so we have been playing on the lake every day and it has been a lot of fun.”

Pasmore plans to show again next week for Horse Shows by the Bay II, and will then be traveling to Lexington, KY, to compete at the North American Junior Young Rider Championships on the Zone 3 ‘B’ Team. She will compete again in the Classics next week and will be doing exercises and lessons throughout the week to prepare for Kentucky. Other summer plans include Trader’s Point and the Hampton Classic.

The $5,000 NAL Low Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic was also held this morning prior to the SJHOF Classic. The Grand Traverse Resort and Spa sponsored the class, and it was Kaitlin Campbell and Sienna, owned by Spy Coast Farm, who rode away with the victory.

An amazing 22 of the original 31 competitors went clear in the first round to jump-off, and of those 22, six went double clear. Kaitlin Campbell and Sienna were the fastest of those double clear rounds with a time of 37.154 seconds to earn the first place prize.

Second place honors were awarded to Lillie Keenan and Chloe’, who went double clear in 37.890 seconds. Catherine Pasmore rode Chambertina to a clear jump-off round in 41.200 seconds to earn the third place ribbon and prizes. Fourth place went to Tina DiLandri and Chanel 292 who went clear and galloped through the timers in a time of 41.931 seconds. Fifth place was awarded to Kenzie Donovan and Max, who had a clear jump-off round in 42.780 seconds. The final double clear round to earn sixth place was Chula and Christine Grahl with a time of 43.712 seconds.

Kaitlin Campbell has been showing Sienna for Spy Coast Farm since the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL, this year, and she expressed her gratitude to the farm’s owners for giving her the opportunity to show their horses. Campbell trains with Shane Sweetnam and John Roach, and is currently in her last year as a junior rider before heading off to college at American University in the fall.

After today’s win, Campbell talked about how much fun Sienna is to ride. “She is very forward, so I don’t have to use any leg on her,” Campbell stated. “She is constantly dragging me, but I like that kind of a ride. She is constantly going and there is no stopping her, which is great when you have 22 in the jump-off and you need to go fast. She is also very careful.”

“Before I went in I asked my trainer if I could do seven down the last line because everyone else was doing eight or nine, and he was like ‘I don’t know, I don’t think so,’ but I just landed off of the jump and she went and it was an easy seven, which was great,” Campbell smiled. “It was her kind of course because it was more running than turning. She is much faster when she can just gallop instead of when there is a lot of turning in a tight ring. This ring is great because it is so open and you can really gallop.”

This is Campbell’s third year showing at Horse Shows by the Bay, and she noted how much she loves the show. She will be showing again next week and will then also travel to Lexington to compete in the North American Junior Young Rider Championships.

The first week of competition at the 2009 Horse Shows by the Bay Equestrian Festival will wrap up tomorrow with the $30,000 Spy Coast Farm Grand Prix of Traverse City. The class will begin at 2 p.m. and spectators are invited to watch for a $5 admission. Competition for Horse Shows by the Bay II will start up on Wednesday, July 15, for another week of exciting competition at the Flintfields Horse Park.
